Actually, I've remembered a bit more about that Sweden 1988 story.

Krylbo IF 0 v Sheffield United 7

I got pissed after the game. I'd misread the train timetable to get back to Stockholm. The train we went for didn't run on Saturday. And there were no more trains back to Stockholm. So we found a local hotel, booked just one room, and all bunked in there. I went out for another drink and got even more pissederer.

I was woken in the morning by furious banging on the hotel room door. Fuck Sake. Must be Swedish Plod (again). What the fuck has happened now.

I opened the door to a young gentleman in a Sheffield United track suit.

"Er, I've just come to tell you lot that the Gaffer says you need to be on the bus in 20 minutes."

I had no fucking idea what he was talking about.

"You know, the bus, the bus to the game, it was all agreed last night."

I guess I pieced it all together rather quickly and mumbled something like...

"Oh yeah. The bus. The Gaffer. Twenty minutes you say. I'll make sure everyone is ready in plenty of time. And .... you are?"

"I'm Andy Barnsley..."

Vassunda-Alliansen 0 v Sheffield United 9

I know a different sport and it technically is a league fixture but Rugby League are taking Hull KR and Leeds Rhinos to Las Vegas in February 2026, that was announced in May 2025. It’s part of a bigger setup with Australian teams going but they are expecting 10,000 from Leeds going as part of a 60,000 capacity stadium with 4 fixtures over the day.

Yeah they did that this year with Wigan and Warrington.

Just back from a few days in Spain and saw Millwall play Northampton in the Pinadar arena. Restaurant, bar and 32 degree heat at 1900. About 500 Millwall and 60 Northampton fans made it. The Pinadar hosts a variety of games for visiting teams who train there for the week I think it’s Swansea this week. Seems other teams recognise it can be a bit of a focussed holiday for fans and is odd United don’t. PS- naturally we stood with Northampton as seeing South London’s less than finest at very close quarters felt like I was on a Wormwood scrubs reunion or an ‘armed robbers on the run and hiding in the sun’ annual jamboree…

In the era before the internet, we sort of had to track the team down when we were out there, and ask when & where the next game was. Sweden 1988 was a belter. At the game on 6 August, we asked and were told about a game the next day, 7 August. We couldn't find a sensible way of getting to it from where we were.

Dave Bassett agreed we could travel on the Team Bus...
Harry was such a breath of fresh air to a club dying on its arse
