Do you have second and third refereeing 'balls ups'?

ISC

That cunt in the first-leg PO game v. Swindon, May 17th last season. He gave us fuck all and managed to 'miss' a blatant handball by Swindon in the area at the BL end.

The Blades are underachieving terribly. 15 points off Burton.

Fixed it, etc.

Clough didn't have Billy Sharp. How many points has he won for us this season?

Hard to say, but Billy has scored 15 this season (all in the League and he never scores more than one in a game...) but this should give an idea:

He scored the first at home v. Blackpool. We won 2-0.
He scored the second away at Swindon. We won 2-0.
He scored the equaliser at Bradford away, 2-2 so that's a definite point he's won for us.
He scored the third at home to Donnie which we won 3-1.
He scored at home to Fleetwood, we won 3-0.
He scored the only goal in the 1-0 at home to Coventry. (2 points).
He scorefd the only goal in the 1-0 away at Scunthorpe. (2 points).
He scored one in the 3-1 home win v. Bradford.
He scored in the 3-3 away at Wigan. (1 point).
He scored in the 2-1 win away at Colchester (2 points).
He scored in the 1-1 draw v. Swindon. (1 point).
He scored the only goal in the home game against Port Vale. (2 points).

So, ignoring assists, off-ball running, covering for that useless lump Sammon etc. he's directly gained United eleven points, without which we'd now be in 16th place and Saturday's game at Rochdale would be a 'relegation 3-pointer'. (instead of the mid-table scuffle it actually is.)

There was a stat going round a couple of weeks ago that Harry Kane's goals had contributed -1 points to Spurs this season; he scored one in a draw with Arsenal, and an own goal in a game they drew, essentially costing 2 points. All his other goals came in high scoring wins.

Lies, damn lies and statistics ;)

So would you swap Billy for 'arry? :D

Looks a bit less of a genius when you consider he signed most of them.
.

was just about to post the same thing - thought
William Henry Foulkes was being ironic at first

edit: if anything Paul Cook has got more out of McNulty so the argument stands up even less

That's because it is. Sign mid table players, you get mid table.

Thought there was a bit of an ominous report in Pompey's local rag a couple of days ago, from Marc McNulty's point of view. On the one hand, Paul Cook is heaping praise on Michael Smith like "I think Michael has been excellent, I have great belief in him and the whole squad" & "Michael is as good a target man as you will find at this level ... He has fantastic feet, is a brave lad, leads the line well and has an eye for a goal" as well as making excuses on his behalf about the team not playing to his strengths. On the other he talks in very general terms about "McNulty", about him being a "good player" who's "gone flat", but that he won't turn on him -

"If you get little breaks into your players every now and then – like we have with McNulty – then it can help. He went a bit flat, everyone does, every club you are at players will go flat every now and again. It is important in my book you don’t turn on your players. McNulty is a good player. If
he doesn’t play well on a Saturday, he is still a good player. The reality for Marc is he doesn’t have to do anything to get back into the team – he will find himself in it naturally. Just being here he will find a way back in – he is Marc McNulty. Like every player at our club, we have faith and belief in them all." Just sounds a bit cold to me. (Although maybe I'm just reading too much into it?)

Wonder if Sparky's bubble has burst down there?

I think it's in your head tbh. 'He doesn't have to do anything to get in the side - he's Marc McNulty'. Sounds OK to me.

Yeah, you're probably right. Smith's just come in, & that's maybe why Paul Cook was talking him up (that, along with him coming into a bit of a disjointed & underperforming side). As you say, the conclusion is that McNulty will find his way back in.

He did. Started last night, got hooked after about 70 minutes. From the match report he didn't do that much but it was a brief report.

You're confident it's not England's fourth division that's got more out of McNulty?

UTB

I'm not even confident of that really. After a bright start he's been dropped last few games, played last night but subbed. Cook said he'd gone a bit "flat" and needed resting. Comparing that to how many starts Billy Sharp has made a division higher (and having pain killing injections in his foot) says it all for me. Fourth division or Scotland is Sparky's limit IMO

I read it earlier today and that's how I interpreted it, reading between the lines. He's been given the chances everyone said he didn't get here, regular starts, and now he's gone "flat" and been dropped. Got a feeling he'll be coming back in the summer but at least it can be said that he has been given a chance this time. Wish Pompey would sign him personally.

Edit: I'm not that interested in Pompey or McNulty really but find it interesting as we have a few ex-players there, to see how much of it is down to the players versus things going on here.
