A couple of games that stick in my mind are firstly when we played Scunny off the park but lost 0-4 at home and around 1980 ish when we scored 4 in 5 minutes just before half time at the Lane end and did bugger all for the rest of the game.

I think the game in which we scored 4 in about as many minutes was against Torquay in our 4th division season.

Very strange game. Quite dull until that point. Then 5 minutes of utter chaos (from Torquay's perspective) where we scored, then repeatedly won possession back almost immediately from the restarts and went straight back up the Lane end and scored again. As you say, very little of note in the second half except for Torquay getting one back. Think it was Tony Brown (formerly of WBA) who scored it.

The 2-0 loss at the sty during the triple assault season. How we lost two nil will remain an eternal mystery. Also the one nil away win against West Brom under Warnock. We got absolutely battered, and nicked it in the last minute. Peschisolido hit the bar with a long range effort and Asaba finished it.Only time I've ever felt a smidgeon of guilt leaving a ground. I think it was our only effort on goal: https://www.11v11.com/matches/west-bromwich-albion-v-sheffield-united-08-december-2001-10325/

Around October/November 1983 at Plymouth during our third division promotion season (the first one!). We were played off the park for about 85 minutes. Probably more emphatically than that West Brom game.

Plymouth hit the bar, hit the post, had one cleared off the line and completely dominated throughout. But it just wouldn't go in. Then with about 5 minutes or less to go up pops Philliskirk to head home a thoroughly undeserved winner.

As we trooped out of the away end a Plymouth supporter called over to us "Well done. You deserved it". Someone amongst our group replied " No we f*****g didn't".

Sept 1974. L**ds 5 Blades 1. We were easily the better side in the 1st half but L**ds score 2 against the run of play. We had a chance to pull a goal back before half time with a penalty but Keith Eddy's effort hit the post

At 3-4 down I remember the obsceneties flooding from my big fat gob........
I was very happy to have it shoved back down my throat at 5-4

I remember the 4-0 game. Can't remember who it was against, but It was one of the most boring matches I have ever seen. First half an hour, nobody put two passes together, then we scored. All of a sudden we were stunning. five minutes later we were 4 up. Then that was it, for the rest of the game we went back to sleep. Can't believe a 4-0 win could be so bad, but it was, except of course for that 5 minutes. Right then we were world beaters, then we stopped. Must have been a dream.

What was the game against Cardiff when we scored about 4 in ten minutes and won something like 5-3 at the Lane?

Yep, every goal was in the second half. Richard Langley and Michael Tonge both scored free kicks, Earnshaw got a brace, Ndlovu scored a hat trick (including two penalties) and Jack Lester scored maybe the goal of the season.

I remember that game. I wasn't there, but remember seeing the result and thinking we must have been battered. At that time I was living on the dark side of the pennines, near Blackpool, but the highlights of the game were shown on the Granada TV Sunday football show. In those days the highlights were far more comprehensive and lasted substantially longer than they do today, so you could get a good feel for how the match had gone. From what I saw, 5-1 was definitely a freak result. A bit like the 5-2 result at Colchester in 1982. Everything they hit seemed to go in.

Coventry at home in Adkins’ season. They had one over the line that George hid from the officials, McEevely should have been sent off for a terrible studs up challenge, we offered nothing all game then got a corner, everyone missed it, Billy tried to duck out of the way and it hit him on the back and bounced in the opposite corner. Least deserved win I can remember being at.

That 4-0 reverse after ripping Scunthorpe to shreds was bizarre. I used to tell people that was the best performance I’d ever seen from a Blades team. Then Wilder arrived!

That wasn't early 80's, unless there was another game against Brighton that went exactly the same way with the scoring.

It was the season we got promotion to the top tier under Dave Bassett wasn't it?

Late August 89 I think. John Francis diving header for the last minute winner. Only time the little fella probably ever scored with his head.

Flogged him to Burnley I think later that season and brought in Paul Wood from coincidentally Brighton I think with the money. Think Paul Wood might have scored a couple for Brighton in that 5-4 match as well.

the game I always mention in this context is our 5-1 win over Huddersfield in March 1989. Craig Maskell missed an early penalty, we were up against it but they gave us a pen from a handball and Duffield scored. 1-0 at ht in an even game.

Duff got a beauty just after half time for 2-0, they battered us for half an hour but only got one back, we broke and Andy May scored an own goal for 3-1. That knocked the stuffing out of them and Bryson and Deano added goals in the last 10 minutes.

5-1 to us in a game where we'd been camped in our penalty area for over half of it.
