BLACKBURN have confirmed that Rovers striker Francis Jeffers is talking to the Owls.

It means that Wednesday's summer-long search for a striker could be nearing its end.

In an effort to replace Steve MacLean they made bids for Scunthorpe's Billy Sharp and Southampton's Kenwyne Jones and Grzegorz Rasiak and have been linked strongly with many forwards, including Newcastle's Andy Carroll and Watford's Darius Henderson.

In turning to Jeffers the Owls are lining up a striker who has a Premiership pedigree but is still only 26.

A fee – rumoured to be worth around £700,000 – is believed to have been agreed.

The whole MacLean thing though; wasn't that a case of it all blowing up in Laws' face after he failed to get Billy Sharp to sign for you? If it hadn't been for Laws being so confident about signing Sharp, MacLean would never have been allowed to leave. Interestingly, I have it on good authority that the Owls offered more money than any other team for Sharp's services, but he didn't want to play for you.

Sheffield Wednesday are pleased to announce the signing of striker Francis Jeffers from Blackburn Rovers for an undisclosed fee.

The former Everton, Arsenal and Charlton Athletic forward has accrued more than £10m in transfer fees during his career and the 26-year-old will go straight into the squad for the Owls' season opener at Ipswich Town on Saturday.

Previously made the country's highest paid teenager following his prolific form at Everton, Jeffers comes to Hillsborough with a reputation for excellent finishing and should be a major asset to the club in the coming season.
