Update on our position after 4 league matches:

POS. POINTS SEASON AUTOMATIC PLAY OFF GOALS AGAINST
3rd 10pts Season 2011-2012 Level with 2nd 3pts ahead of 7th 8 3
4th 9pts Season 2015-2016 1pt behind 2nd 2pts ahead of 7th 7 5
5th 8pts Season 2012-2013 2pts behind 2nd 1pt ahead of 7th 8 5
12th 6pts Season 2014-2015 3pts behind 2nd 1pt behind 6th 4 4
16th 4pts Season 2013-2014 8pts behind 2nd 3pts behind 6th 4 7

Observations:
A gap had already opening up between our early season performances in the first two seasons down in League 1 compared to the last two seasons, which saw us placed 12th and 16th at this stage respectively. The positive news is that our form so far this season is more in keeping with the first two seasons than the latter two.

You cannot take control of the division after only four games, but it it possible to become far enough adrift of the top teams that you are already playing catch up. Two seasons ago under Weir we were already 8pts off the top 2 and automatic promotion was already disappearing over the horizon.

Outside of the Weir season, our defence have been pretty consistent in the number of goals conceded after the first four games. The big difference is in the number of goals scored. We finally have an attacking line up that has goals in it and this should give us confidence for the road ahead.

We have made a better start than in any of the last three seasons. If we can secure four points from the next two games at Swindon and at home to Colchester (assuming this game does not become an international postponement) we will be in a very healthy position. Big test next week.
