Looking at the team line ups shown on old programmes reproduced by Silent and other lesser mortals on here got me thinking about the various formations that teams have used over the years .
Pre 1960 , almost every programme showed the teams lining up with 2 full backs , 3 half backs and 5 forwards . In fact , that's not the way it worked at all .
To begin with , the centre half didn't operate between the half backs but between the full backs , ie , 3 at the back (sound familiar?)
Nor did the 5 'forwards' operate as such . Instead ,the inside forwards dropped back to form a 4 in midfield when not attacking, whilst the latter dropped back to form a 5 when defending . In other words , the system that the vast majority of teams played in that era was effectively a system very similar to the one adopted by many of the world's most successful teams today .
Plus ca change .........
