and they have had 69 top tier seasons to our 60, so I am afraid you are just wrong.

Is that counting the 22 years they played before we were founded :D

You do realise that clubs are subsidised by around £30million to play in the Premier League and this is why some clubs can offer cheaper season tickets than us. It's not rocket science is it?

Whilst we're realising stuff, you do realise Evertons wage bill is well above £30million greater than ours too?

Oh Dear!

We are starting to sound slightly piggish in the I am more right than you cos I have better info thru wikipedia or somesuch!
Basically your saying i'm right cos i'm more pedantic than you...Again
And yet we go on about how we hate Weds fans going on about bigger gates.

They have won 8 major trophies (league 4 FA Cup 3 and League Cup 1) to our 5 (league 1, FA Cup 4), and they have had 69 top tier seasons to our 60, so I am afraid you are just wrong.

The Sheffield teams were more or less even until WWII with perhaps United being slightly "bigger" (Bramall Lane was the best ground in Sheffield and regularly hosted FA Cup semi finals). There is no real argument that Wednesday have generally been the bigger team since WWII.

Ah, but Darren you are ignoring the fact that we have never achieved a position as low in the attendance rankings as they have done! They have been 36th in the attendance charts twice - 1976 and 1979. The lowest we have achieved is 35th (in 2000). So, although over the years more of them have turned out to watch them than us, they are clearly made of softer stuff than us and desert in greater numbers when the going gets tough.;)

On a more serious note, it is nice to eclipse them on occasions and I wish we did so more frequently, but they could be the biggest club in the world for all I care. I would still rather be a Blade than an Owl. The fact that they seem to think they are significantly bigger, superior etc to us merely underlines the extent of their failure. For a club that is soooooooooo big they really don't have a lot toi show for it over the last 75 years.

I love it!

A criticism on the basis that I am being pedantic because I am right about the facts and he is wrong. I mean, who ever let the facts get in the way of a good brag :-)

I think he's saying he's right because he is actually right. And I don't see the connection between being factually correct and "piggish". the discussion was revolving around facts. I don't see the need for abuse.

But then I remember the early 70's when Villa were bumming around the 2nd and 3rd Divisions and Birmingham were a decent top division team, with the likes of Bob Latchford, Trevor Francis and Bob Hatton knocking in goals for them (how about that for a dream forward line). Villa were promoted to the First Division in 75 and have been pretty much the top Birmingham team ever since.

It is perhaps analagous to Sheffield in the respect that United emerged from Wednesday's shadow in the early 1970's and enjoyed the status until the end of the decade. Wednesday's promotion from the third in 1980 saw them enjoy a 2 decade period of dominance, as you say Villa have done so pretty much since 1975.

One thing about Birmingham City though - their crowds are absolutley abysmal. It is the 2nd biggest team in a city of over 1.1m people and barely scrapes 22000 at home games. Contrast this to United and Wednesday, averaging 18 and 20000 in the Third Division. Sheffield football may have had little to celebrate in the way of trophies over the years, but imagine if the city was the size of brum - the crowds would be enormous.

Sorry if you think I was being abusive, as that wasn't how it was meant to sound and wasn't just aimed at Darren.

However your last post started off saying he had ignored some facts, so you were obviously showing off that you have looked up more facts than him..............

Sorry I just find it all a bit tedious

Noone is forcing you to read the thread so if you find it tedious you could stop reading it.

My reply to him was as much in fun as anything else which I would have thought was pretty obvious. But, when a discussion is revolving around various facts relating to the two clubs then it is natural that facts will form a large part of the discussion.

Calling someone "piggish" means you are saying they are like a pig. I don't think there is any other way to view that than as being abusive.

Calm down- If you are so concerned on facts then you might like to reread my post....which was meant slightly tongue in cheek btw..
I said WE are sounding slightly piggish.....
Meant no offence...
So don't take any....

I have not been anything other than calm. I'm not taking offence for my part, but Darren's posts are often full of factual information and I for one am glad that he takes the time and trouble to post those facts.

I think you'll find that Darren rarely needs to refer to Wikipedia or any other internet source for his SUFC facts (not for anything since the war anyway). It is all in his memory banks. He can quote you every result in every competitive SUFC game since the war along with the goalscorers!

You make me blush :-)

Actually, I only go back to 61-62, but it's absolutely true that if you give me any date since August 61 I can tell you the nearest United game with opponents, score and scorers. Talk about a misspent youth....

oh that will be that then, we can forget about sponsorship, gate receipts and other income. Is that the same as ours?

No, but using your logic I'm staggered ST's for Accrington arent £3500 each.
