For those lauding a ‘Great January’

Wilson was a supremely bad error of judgement from day one, signed purely on the basis he was a ManUre. Genuinely poor footballer.

Holmes appears to be going the same route as Samir, with significantly less game time under his belt.

UTB
Samir could be a half decent player if he had some end product, defensive discipline and cut out the silly tricks in his own half.

Apart from that.......
He looked a great talent in league one, to be fair. I think there’s something there but haven’t got the time to give him the games to realise it, and maybe no one will.

I’d probably sell him in the summer don’t get me wrong but I do think he’s got something. Might not be championship class

First things first, let's remember what the doom merchants were actually saying in the run up to the JTW: Wilder won't be given any money, Brooks will never play for us again (the glandular fever thing is a lie), and Fleck may well be off too.

Anyway, I'll happily hold my hand up and say I thought at the time that the January window went well for us. Can't remember now what I posted about it. We needed extra cover for midfield (so Bash didn't have to play there; we got Evans and Leonard), creativity to unlock stubborn defences (we got Holmes); and a new option up front (we got Wilson, who looked different class on his debut vs. Norwich and has widely been regarded as a potential star before his injury problems). Kept hold of our best players.

As it turns out, Evans has looked good in flashes but is inconsistent and hasn't quite grasped the principles of Wilderball yet; he's young and may well go on to have a good career with. Wilson just hasn't been fit and never recovered in the eyes of the fans after his stupid interviews (but imagine if that overhead kick against Villa had gone in...). It's hard to fathom what's gone on with Leonard and Holmes. Maybe we'll find out sometime.

And anyone who thinks Mitrovic was coming to an unfashionable northern club when Fulham had come calling (whatever your back-of-the-envelope maths tells you) is very seriously mistaken, in my opinion. Let's judge the club by realistic standards, yeah?

I was really pessimistic about the window at the beginning when Wilder said it was likely to be three loans and one permanent. But then it turned out to be the other way round so that was a major plus. As for the signings the three permanent signings were all from League One and its natural that they'll take a while to adjust to the standard. Leonard and Evans and Lundstram from the summer, are all young and when you buy players for small fees as they are in today's market, you can't expect them to be the finished article. But all three show potential and with a season or half season with us I'm sure they'll step up again next season.

We just cannot expect to buy players from League One that are between the 3-600,000 market to be world beaters. Exactly as Wilder said. If we want to get in the top six next season we need to start looking at more expansive players essentially. They cost more because they are more experienced at this level and/or better skilled. But that's not to say that Evans, Leonard and Lundstram won't make it with us either.

No one can judge Holmes at the minute, as he's hardly played. Wilson on the other hand needs to realise he's not a Man U player anymore and will be lucky to get a club bigger than Blackburn to take him next season.
