I have no issues with people being told their useless at some point, everyone will get that. What is not on, is the 4/5 people right behind Long telling him they hope he dies, and another said they hope his family dies of Cancer.

That kind of stuff should never be shrugged off as the players fault for being crap, that kind of thing should never be accepted in any way.

Are you kidding me? Jesus wept. What on earth is wrong with these morons.

I didn't realise that the abuse was that bad or that personal.

Some of the things that posters have said they've overheard are completely out of order in any situation. Telling someone they're crap is hardly productive but fair enough, but telling players they should die is completely reprehensible.

The club needs to do something about fans who carry on like that. It's easy to say other fans should police it, but in reality it isn't always that simple (although the one time I heard racist abuse being shouted at the Lane the perpetrator was soon silenced). I think, as fans, we need to be reporting this kind of thing to stewards and trying to get these pond life banned. There's no place for that kind of abuse at our club, let alone in society.

Apologies for my response to the initial post, I just assumed it was people telling players they were crap.

The level of abuse on Saturday had to be heard to be believed. It started behind me before the opening goal had even been scored. A Lady behind me remonstrated with several of the vocal minority to no avail. I imagine that all who were there felt let down and cheated by that performance but the anger and verbal abuse directed at certain players was ridiculous.

Apart from the bile directed at George Long, the moron shouting that Jamie Murphy was " an effing F****t" should be ashamed of himself

I wondered after the game whether it would have made any difference to the result had we been kicking towards our fans first half instead.

We're never going to have a situation where you don't have people moaning and groaning. But I don't think I've seen that scale of reaction to specific players since the relegation season.

I had the same thought myself. It must be better to be mocked by the opposing fans than to be abused by your own

Out of interest, where were people sat that heard the abuse? I'm not doubting there was any but I didn't hear much of the personal stuff myself.

I was middle-right.

I was to the left of the goal, lower part of the upper tier. I heard generalised shouting but not much in the way of abuse (that I could pick out).

I must admit I did get a sense of the general atmosphere and felt relived at HT when Long would be at the other end for the rest of the game.

I agree. We all get passionate but football matches are one of the few places now where, if it's what floats your boat, you can get away with effing and blinding to your heart's content at someone while they are in the course of doing their job. In the workplace you'd be disciplined. In a shop or other public place you would be thrown out or arrested. Or you would simply get twatted, and you'd deserve it.

I had some 20 something with his shirt off threatening to twat me for asking him how he was helping us by abusing Long during the game "why don't you fuck off before I twat you" was his well thought out response. Needless to say when I told him he could have a go he backed down - typical all mouth when he thinks he can get away with no response.

I was to the right of the net, 3? Might have been 4 rows from the front. I wasn't sure who exactly it was that was shouting those stuff, but I did take a picture of the area it was coming through and I have pissed the image onto the club and told them the things they were saying. Not much they can do from that alone, but if more people have made complaints/reported it, they could be found. Or even for the future, if more things like that are to happen.
