I know I am not alone in feeling extremely apprehensive at the prospect of Prince Abdullah taking control of OUR club. While, we’ve had ups and downs (pun intended) under McCabe, he has always acted with The Blades’ best interests at heart and moved the club forward – albeit not at the speed intended.
We are now faced with an individual, with no local or cultural ties, taking over with, as far as it’s possible to tell, little or no knowledge of English football – indeed a greater interest in the American version.
When he came on board in 2013, it was with the remit of funding our return to The Premier League, within 5 years. That could still happen but, if it does, it won’t be on the back of ‘think Liverpool’ bankrolling. That’s not to say ‘game changing investment’ would have guaranteed a rapid rise to the top – as our neighbours have proved – but it is what he was brought on board to provide. We were told that major investment would arrive once we returned to The Championship. Well, we did but it didn’t.
This could lead one to speculate that The Prince is far more interested in what he can make out of OUR club in the event of an under-funded promotion to The Premier League than he is in our longer term best interests.
In the absence of serious cash, we may have hoped for some support in respect of commercial expertise or sponsorship. As far as I am aware, there has been no significant contribution in either area.
The Prince’s advisors have been similarly underwhelming. Jim Phipps, for all his good, PR intentions, was never going to cut it when the natives became restless. Selahattin Baki got us a friendly with Fenerbache but little else of note. More recently, it seems, The Prince was given short thrift when he tried to impose Jan Van Winckel on the Technical Board.
Finally, and most bewilderingly, he announces his purchase of a Belgium club just before confirming his desire to take control of The Blades.
So, I am left feeling very uncertain as to what value ‘our Prince’ has added to our club and where his future priorities really lie. To help clarify the situation, I would like answers to the following questions:
1. How much has The Prince invested in the club since our return to The Championship?
2. When was his last significant financial contribution to the club?
3. What is The Prince’s current personal net worth?
4. How many Blades games has The Prince attended since 2013?
5. Would The Prince choose to watch The Blades away at Reading on a cold February night or the 49ers in The Superbowl?
