Bryan Robson has finally got the man he expects to deliver the goods in making his Blades squad the best prepared in the Championship.
Richard Hawkins has succeeded Tony Daley and, as Head of Sports Science and Conditioning, is charged with the responsibility, not only of getting the players in tip top condition, but of developing a department that should be the envy of clubs across the land.
Hawkins, 35, is already installed and Robson has no doubts that his man has been worth waiting for:
"We first met when I was taking coaching badges and Richard was working for the FA at Lilleshall, and I saw him lecturing and taking fitness sessions.
"He was outstanding at man management with a heck of a knowledge about all aspects of fitness, and eventually he came to work with me at WBA. After a couple of years together there I know full well how respected he was by the players there.
"Ideally I would have wanted him with us at United from the start of the season but he had to work his notice with Albion. We have a good working relationship and as far as I'm concerned we have got one of the best in the business."
Richard is looking forward to a new challenge at the Lane and is not concerned about what may appear a sideways move:
"People may ask which club is bigger but from my point of view the important factor is knowing the support I will be given from the top.
"Bryan knows my background and capabilities and is very receptive to new ideas. He will give me the freedom to develop the players how I feel is needed, and the chance to work with sports science staff in a structured, coherent way that will benefit all players at all age levels
