Taking my 7 year old boy down to Bramall Lane for the first time tonight, for the Blades v Stoke friendly.

Always said that I didn't want to get him into football, and especially the Blades, as they have generally caused me more misery and pain, than happiness over the years.

However, it's too late for me, United are in my blood and I'm stuck with them until the day I pop my mortal coil. My little boy though, I just hope that I'm doing the right thing by him, and not consigning him to the same footballing frustrations that I've had to endure over the past 40-odd years.

Hopefully the tide has turned and the Blades are at last on an upwards trajectory with Sir Chris Wilder?

Up The Mighty Blades!

Fingers crossed that he can get us to the promised land in the next few years, and then keep us there. I predict that he will.

I reckon about 15000 at the Lane tonight, and I can't wait to see the young Brooks strut his stuff.

My 1st game as a 9 year old kid was at home to Stoke also,we won 2-0 in old 1st division

Choosing to follow the Blades is a life educating decision. If you take your kids to watch Chelsea,Man Utd they grow up thinking life is easy and all youu have to do is throw money around to be successful.
Better to educate them that success has to be earned and that when it comes around like last season for us its to be enjoyed but not expected !

You're doing the right thing.

He'll be in for a roller coaster of emotions, great highs and terrible lows but so much better than being a top 5 club fan. Winning yet another cup or title becomes routine and they won't get the same highs as us and others of similar size.

With United he'll always have that dream of seeing us win something because potentially we're a club that could be relatively successful. That's what keeps us going, the hope!

Certainly..

My brother first started taking my nephew in 2011/12, he will have been about 7 when we played Huddersfield at Wembley and as soon as Somionsen booted the ball over the net, he burst into tears. My brother looked at him and said something along the lines of "man up, if you think supporting United is gonna be great all the time you're mistaken, this is about as good as it gets"

He's obsessed with all things football now, not just United.

Really ? ,Think you have the wrong hobby.

The alternative was to let him make his own decisions and ((((shudder)))) we all know where that could have led. Look at me, never made an issue of it for either of the kids. My son is a blade but my daughter has now been exiled because of her liking of all that is pork!!! Oh the shame, the shame!

Think you may have miscalculated that bit with only two stands open (plus behind the goal for Stoke fans):

I reckon Stoke will bring at least 2000, and if we took nearly 4000 to Rotherham last week for a midweek match, I don't think the attendance will be too far off 15000.

It's the only home friendly we'll have since being promoted, so I think there will be a lot of interest, especially with young Brooks making the headlines. We'll see, but I for one am certainly looking forward to tonight.

There seemed lot of people on the concourse getting over excited for a win last Friday!
Its a friendly! Relax and enjoy it, so long as we hit Brentford a week on Saturday.... That's what counts.

jesus..... Brooks is that good hes sticking an extra 5k on the gate......

It's bittersweet for me. My father felt guilt about the lifetime of suffering he condemned me to by bringing me up to follow United and I feel the same with my two.

I felt terrible watching them both in tears when we lost to Palace in 1997 and there have been more bad times than good since then. However, the enjoyable times are so much sweeter for sharing and it's not an exaggeration to say that we're closer because of a shared love of TRAWW. I wouldn't change anything.

Stoke City was the first away game my dad took me to - way back in the early 1950s. The excuse was that we could see Stanley Matthews, as well as the Blades.

Matthews didn't play that day. I had to wait for Hagan's testimonial game a few years later to see the legendary Stan in action.

My dad always says I should get in touch with a lawyer and sue him over making me a Blade, around this time last year I was looking for a good lawyer but I've temporarily put it on hold. It's not too late for you to back out, it could cost you a small fortune even after he's 18/21/25/30 etc etc !

My grandad felt the same way about getting 4 year old me into the Blades, especially when it was pretty much downwards from there. Still, I think the few moments of glory have all been worth it: the triple assault season, promotion to the Prem, coming within 45 minutes of an FA Cup final as a third tier team, and finally the 100 pointer.

Nothing builds character like supporting the Blades. If that doesn't help him to handle the disappointments and low points in life I don't know what will!

Hope he enjoys the game. Your first game is special. Mine was Southampton in the old first division (v Shearer, Le Tissier et al).....we lost 2-0.....of course.

My first two games were against Bournemouth and Brighton in what was then Division 3. Where are they now?

The first goal I say us score was Richard Cadette.

im probably just repeating what others have said. but ive been taking my neice to football now since 1st game david weir extremely short tenure. i think everyone should support a football team growing up, because i know at times of that ages are allowed to win at games. but football shows that you cant win everytime & that it doesnt come easy you have work hard. & as football supporting is either family or city your born in. it gives you pride in your city when your successful finally. which is why i hate gloryhunting so much

Magical at that age, the first view of the pitch is something that I still remember from my first ever game in 1978.

Got the bug from that very day, and Mum has a photo of me proudly holding a knitted (by gran) red & white scarf above my head.

Hope he enjoys it, and becomes a Blade for life, like I did.

Heartache is part of being any football fan, but those special days, seasons, and moments are why we go.
Love seeing the next generation at games, get him singing the songs and cheering us on.

My three sons have to put up with Arsenal and Spurs fans down here but have never shirked their bloodline. On his last day at school, my eldest had his shirt signed by mates and teachers (as is the way) and there were dozens of messages about United and him being a Blade. In a weird way they're even prouder supporting the club down here and travelling to games with me and meeting my Dad. It's a way of life, not a choice but it's gained that awful term 'respect' because anyone can support the top clubs from their armchair. Even my 13yr old daughter is intrigued, it's her first game on the 5th v Brentford because she wants to understand what all the fuss is about. Have a fantastic night MB, both of you, a night you'll both never forget.

Like Treeton, that first view of the pitch back in 1977 will stay with me forever. The ground may have changed but I know I'll get that same buzz as the pitch comes into view tonight. It's just deep inside you and will never leave.
My daughter is 21 now and a red and white diehard home and away. Do I feel guilty? Not in the slightest. It has given us some great times and brought us closer. My dream would be for both of us to see the blades win something one day. The hope will always be there

My first game (which I was old enough to remember) was relegation to the third division in 1988 at the hands of Carl Shutt.

My therapist says it didn't do me any harm.

You say that, but I've been taking my son for a couple of years now. He had a season ticket last year so went to most home games and a scattering of games the season before. He hasnt seen us lose a single game. Not one. He got the lip on in the one single game he saw us draw. Furthermore, he goes to school with Jake 'unbeaten' Wrights son. He's conviced he supports an invicible football team.

I fear his first full season wasnt the best prep for a life of bladeyness.

Mate all the pain and suffering is made worthwhile when you get the odd success like last season!!!

I'm thankful to my Father for taking me to that 1st game. Wouldn't have it any other way and I hope my Daughters like Football enough to pass it on to them.
