Fill the Lane on Saturday

Yep, he may be one of the best players to have graced the Lane in the last 20 or so years but he'll probably be filed alongside the likes of Cowans, Thompson, McGrath etc in terms of actual playing games for us. In terms of management, will he be considered any more favourably than, say, Steve Bruce in years to come ?

While I appreciate what he did while here, I don't think his achievements at Sheffield United deserve that kind of recognition.

Would it be insensitive to ask what happened with Steve Goulding? No need to answer if it's likely to touch a nerve.
 
i'm unable to get to the match this saturday as I live outside the UK, i've tried contacting SUFC about sending me a match day programme but have had no reply from them, was wondering if anyone on here had any advise or was able to post me one to the Isle of Man. will happily cover all costs. Thanks

I will be there Saturday becuase its a Blades home game and its what I do ,I cant help thinking theres a bit of the Lady Di sindrome about all this, where we all become almost profesional mourners.
Gary Speed was a nice enough kid it seemed ,a gentleman with time to talk but to talk about naming stands etc is over egging it in my opinion, i will observe the miutes tribute be it appluase or silence but then I will be there to see a Blades win and after that im guessing his name will simply become a memory over time.
Sorry if that sounds harsh but I m just trying to be realistic

Not insensitive. I didn't know the guy. All I know is that he killed himself in 1985 when he was 30 or 31. No idea why.

There was also Keith Solomon, a reserve goalie who died in training at the Ball Inn in early 1981. He was only 18 or 19 and I think he had some sort of stroke. All United did to commemorate him was to play a memorial game against Truro City (KS was a Cornish lad). Had this happened now, I am sure the Lane would have deluged in floral tributes and we would have named something after him; which says a lot about changes in attitude to death in the last 30 years.

At the risk of being ghoulish I remember it being some sort of suicide pact with his mother.

Its a hazy memory though, so could be totally wrong.

Speaking of suicide pacts (and turning the conversation to my favourite subject of obscure facts from socialist history), do you know about the suicide pact between Marx's daughter Eleanor and Edward Aveling? Eleanor lived with Aveling without marrying him (given that they such radicals) and both were leading figures in late nineteenth century socialism. Aveling was incredibly ugly but apparently extremely charming and had a way with the ladies. He was also, in the comtemporary term, an utter cad.

Whilst living with Eleanor he married someone else (so much for radicalism), and when Eleanor found out, she confronted him with it. Aveling said that the way out of the problem was a suicide pact. Eleanor agreed and got some poison. Aveling said she should go first. She did, died and Aveling then "thought better of it" and went off to be with his wife.

Aveling was given an hard time at the inquest, but astonishgly nothing else happened to him; though that was pretty much the end of Aveling's socialist career.

No, that one had passed me by. I do know that Rory Storm of Rory Storm and the Hurricanes committed suicide with his mother.

I had never even heard of Mr Storm.

Another of Marx's daughters - Laura - also committed suuicide in a pact with her husband, French socialist Paul Lafargue. Paul was less of a cad than Mr Aveling as he did killed himself, leaving the following note:

"Healthy in body and mind, I end my life before pitiless old age which has taken from me my pleasures and joys one after another; and which has been stripping me of my physical and mental powers, can paralyse my energy and break my will, making me a burden to myself and to others. For some years I had promised myself not to live beyond 70; and I fixed the exact year for my departure from life. I prepared the method for the execution of our resolution, it was a hypodermic of cyanide acid. I die with the supreme joy of knowing that at some future time, the cause triumph to which I have been devoted for forty-five years will triumph. Long live Communism! Long Live the Second International".

Indeed. One of the best British live acts of the early 1960s (most people who saw them thought they were better than The Beatles) but no one was interested in recording them.
 
Gutted that I can't make it this weekend, hopefully I'll grab a goal or something in my game and that can be my tribute to him.

Didn't Ringo play in the Hurricanes before the Beatles pinched him?

There does seem to have been a bit of a change from 'Don't speak ill of the dead' to 'Treat the dead as a deity' when its a famous person, ever since Dianna died. Witness Michael Jackson, Steve Jobs and what's her face with the hair recently - all had major character flaws, yet they're lauded as perfect heros. Its all to do with sensationalism selling papers.

Speedo's passing is all the more tragic because he seemingly had it all, and was generally regarded as a Really Nice Bloke. Only one person knows why, and he's not around to tell anyone. By all means, we should pay respects, but turning it into some kind of display of wailing & knashing of teeth doesn't really show that respect.
My brother in law disappeared shortly before my wedding, and turned up as a skeleton in a scottish wood a few years later. It would've been his birthday this week, and it was the week before Christmas he was positively identified. So this time of year is exceptionally difficult for the family. I have an inkling what the family must be going through - the pain and guilt never goes away.
 
Could people try to say "killed himself", "killed themselves" rather than "committed suicide"? Suicide has not been a crime in the UK for many years and it's a very old-fashioned term that causes unnecessary further distress to some people who have been bereaved in this way (as I have). Thanks.

I think speed is the only recent celebrity Death where I haven't received a single joke about. Who's the bird with the hair you're talking about?

Surely for a game like this we should be able to pay at a turnstile, rather than farting about having to walk all the way round to the other side of the ground to buy a ticket. Seems ridiculous, and has put me off going to a game on more than one occassion.

Presumably they lay the wreaths, look at them for a bit, then take them away before the game starts? Let's leave the wreaths until his funeral and stick to the applause / silence and arm bands.

You are not alone...though perhaps a minority on this forum. Its OTT. I suspect that I am in a minority of one but all this has got out of hand
