Apologies if discussed before but what examples are out there of family split loyalties re the derby game .

Personally speaking my eldest two grandsons (11 & 10) and their dad , my son in law , are Wednesday fanatics. They are so exited about tomorrow and in true Weds fashion have been telling me how they will beat us .

My dad was also a Wednesday fanatic and travelled all over the country to watch them - he even drove a supporters coach to away games ,free of charge .

We shared much good humoured banter between us over the years until his passing - I remember him being the only weds ite in the village who came out for a beer , with me , the famous Saturday we went up and they went down .

I hope my grandkids have a good day tomorrow, but I hope I have a better one .

One pig in extended family, school was about 90% Dem Blades. Only one mate in about 20 was unclean.

Let’s hope we stuff em and his phone goes off Sunday night. 😂🐖🐖

My family is a pig free zone. The extended family has a few who proclaim to be pigs (but never go), so they are easy to bat off.

The pub is a different problem. Still mainly Blades but still to many of them. :)

No pigs in my family thankfully. Have one mate who’s a piggy, which is the maximum quota I’m allowing.

Boxing Day ‘79.

Attended the game aged 15.

Had to then go straight to a family gathering at Lodge Moor from the game. Held at my Uncle and Aunt’s home. They and my 3 cousins were all of “the wrong persuasion “ !! 3 had been too.

Horrendous afternoon/evening.

After my red and white bobble had was nicked , stood on their Kop, at a County cup game some year before that game, I’d had an intense dislike for the old enemy! After Boxing Day 79 this obviously intensified.

I hate these Derby games, but can never miss them Home and Away and will always go.

Roll on around 2.30 tomorrow afternoon!!

None here, but had good friends who's parents were split, and of their three kids one was Wendy, two Blades. Always made it fun on Derby day but honestly, there's quite a geographic divide in our fan bases within the city so not sure it happens all that much.

I did once have relations in my 20's with the Wednesday ladies goalkeeper at the time but honestly, while she was great in the sack and a lovely person, I could never see myself settling down with someone who idolised Kevin Pressman and wore his named shirt as Pyjamas.

The youngest of 6 boys, I am the only Blade because I always had to be different. They were all big characters & a lot to live up to, so choosing my own path was important to me. 3 of them were Pig season ticket holders. 2 now deceased, the other is a typical pig - moans a lot but doesn’t actually go to matches these days.

No pressure from the old man - he was a Man City fan. He was orphaned in the 1st World War & taken in by an aunt in Sheffield. He used to take me to both, and the lure of Currie & Woodward won out.

My dad worked in football, and there is a strong family affinity with Wolves & York City as a result.

Despite me, my dad and grandad all being blades, by brother is a Wednesday fan. No idea how that happened, but to be fair we did used to go and watch both teams when we were kids.

We'll just be ignoring one another tomorrow!

Me and my dad were unitedites rest of the family weren't that bothered but with growing up in grenoside nearly all my mates were pigs

Having grown up in S6, pretty much every single one of my mates are Wendies, with the exception of 3 who weren’t brainwashed at birth. I don’t speak to my pig mates about football, they are all completely deluded when it comes to their lot. Some of the stories, crikey…

I have family who are supporters of the unclean, but thankfully the majority are Blades. With our first child on the way, my Mrs and I are already getting excited about the addition of another Blade to the family.

Father in law and nephew are S6 ST holders. Won't affect much before or after, it's football and all of us want to win and enjoy a bit of banter.

Thanks for sharing 👍

My mum was a Blade, my dad a pig. Being a mummy's boy, I made my choice - thank fuck!

Brothers all Blades, sister a pig.

I remember going on their kop as a young kid in the 1970/71 derby (0-0 draw) with my dad and all his pig brothers and mates. I insisted on wearing my United hat and scarf. To his credit, he allowed me to do that - I do remember all his mates weren't happy with him though!

My dad was a typical pig though ...... whenever pigs lost all his went on about was the size of the crowd.

Good on your dad mate. Must have been tough for him but obviously was happy for you on some level :-)

A very good mate of mine from school is Wednesday. Not sure how it happened but -

Dad, Wednesday
Oldest son, Blade
Middle son (my mate), Wednesday
Youngest son, Blade.

Plenty of banter ready for tomorrow.

Dad and grandad both big blades so was simple for me. We’ve got programmes from the 50s in the loft to this day.

Cousins are big owls but at least they’re proper ones, good guys and have a sense of humility.

Best mates growing up in the 80s/90s were mainly Wednesday which tbh was tough at times! But they’ve been quiet as mice for the last 20 years :-)

My family, we’re Wednesday royalty, not even fucking joking. My dad was a top lad though, rebelled.

Born and brought up in S35. Grew up as a lad during Wednesdays heyday and most of those I grew up with supported Wednesday.

My old man was from down south and supported Crystal Palace. My Mum wasn’t interested in football and pretty much the only footballer she knew was Alan Birchenall due to a teenage crush. However I did have a Grandad and 3 Uncles who were all avid Unitedites and they was on hand to offer a gentle guiding hand to steer me in the correct direction.

I married and had a son with a Wednesday fan and for a while he was torn which way to go but thankfully all those trips to Bramall Lane meant my life’s finest work has been creating another staunch Unitedite

All my mum's 6 brothers were Wendy fans, but only two of them were regular attenders. From my dad's side there was just my dad and Uncle Ronnie who were interested in football and both Blades

Just realised who you are now!

My other half's side are all Grunters (mother in-law, sister in-law, brother in-law, nephews in-law). She couldn't give a shiny one about football, so friendly tensions only arise when the topic comes up with the others. They all happen to think we will hammer them tomorrow. Hopefully they are right.

Growing up in Bradwell, my dad and bro were Wednesdayites and I was a Unitedite....

Its really strange, here in the US your loyalties are usually at the collegiate level so its unusual to have split loyalties like what football does to UK families..

For example, most cities have 1 professional team except the really big cities of NY and LA.

Here in Ohio, the rivalry is Ohio State and Michigan football because the two states are next to each other and most people here in OH or MI went to one or the other.

Thanks

He was always happy for me - as I was for him

I did the same after the cup semi

Son of a Wednesday fanatic and still became a Blade ! Strong character or benevolent dad ?

I've probably told this story before, but anyway...
Dad, Mum, Sister and both sets of granparents are Wednesday fans. I have quite a few cousins on my mum's side who are Blades.
In 1970, following Wednesdays relegation from Division 1, my Dad vowed he wasn't going again and being the stubborn bloke he is, kept to his word. I was born in 1971 and spent my early years not knowing who my family supported. I was quite late in getting into football and started playing before I supported anyone. Then, one of my parents friends, a Blade bless him (RIP), took me to my first game, Blades v Hull in January 1980, and that was it, I was a Blade.
My grandad attempted to repair the damage by taking me to Hillsborough later that season but my mind was made up. Once you've chosen, that's it, as far as I'm concerned.

My Dad is of porky persuasion. Think I've said before that I'm forever grateful to my maternal uncle for showing me the light.

The first ever match I attended was a preseason friendly for Wednesday. I was too young to know who they were playing so probably aged 4 or 5, but I do remember the blue jumper I wore with the 90's Owl emblazoned on the front. Thankfully that was the only time I wore it.

A drab rainy midweek game against Port Vale at the lane sorted me out at about 6 years old and it's been the correct way ever since. My two little ones proudly run around in United tops without issue.

The ongoing joke in our family is that you're only allowed to marry in if you're a Blade. My Nannan is the matriarch and married a supposed Pig (though I don't think he was that fussed.)

Family are all Blades or not bothered. I fulfilled the requirements by marrying Foxy - people are still bemused to discover we don't actually sit together at the Lane as our season tickets came before our now 23 year relationship. Both kids are ST holders.

Only Pigs I know are Pig in name only. They don't actually bother going to matches.

My father in law and his son and pretty much the rest of that side of the family are all Wednesdayites as for me well I’m the black sheep, they laughed at me at THE semi finals just had I laughed at them when we went up and they got relegated from the Prem just as they did at me when they went up from division 3 back in the day and again when it happened again in division one but we’ve always had the upper hand in derbys especially at BDTBL
