Since Slew was sent off for fighting at the Villa match several weeks ago there has been no word from the club about his availability for the 2nd leg at the Lane tomorrow.
Has anyone information as to whether he is banned?

I'm not sure if Slew's banned or not either. As you say, there appears to be word either way on the official site.

I've just been trying to familiarise myself with some of the players we'll be watching tonight.
Judging by the player profiles and team v Villa in the last round, it looks like the team will be something like:-

GK Long
RB Montgomery
LB Anderson
CB Maguire
CB Kennedy
CB Barry
MF Whitehouse
MF Harriot
MF Gregory
CF Ironside
CF Slew (or Martin if he's suspended)

I wasn't aware that the Youth team played five at the back. Is that right or is one of those listed as a centre back playing elsewhere?
Can any regular youth team followers tell us more about the players?

Went to the Blackpool match at the Lane and they played 442 that night. For me the lads who shone that night were both centre halves - solid defensively and decent on the ball, Maguire especially and the main lad who looked an excellent prospect was Matt Harriot - really skillful ball playing midfielder.

Terry Kennedy looks a real footballing centre half, I just think that with the emphasis on size in the modern game that he will struggle to make the grade at CH. Interestingly talking to a work colleague who also manages an Evo Stik league club he asked United earlier this season who he might be able to get in on loan, he was told 'You wouldn't want anybody there's none that'll make the grade', so is that what they really think or is it a case of trying to keep a lid on the publicity?

I'd agree with Wilf that Matty Harriott looks good on the ball, but maybe lacking a yard or two in pace.

It might also be that Pemberton doesn't see the merit in sending out 17 and 18 year olds on loan to the lower leagues; instead preferring them to grow as a team. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see the two Norwegians, the Irish, the Aussie and the Hungarian loaned out next year.

Being 5'7" didn't stop Fabio Cannavaro being recognised as one of the best centre halves of his age. If he reads the game as well as everyone is saying, he's got every chance. Failing that, could he step up to defensive midfield?

Interesting article on the O/S. The last time we had an under 18 squad that reached the semi-final (1973), only three of them subsequently made the grade into the first team. It's a fact of life. Even young players in international squads often don't make it beyond non-league level.

We shouldn't expect too much from them in the long-term.

It's likely that very few will make it - but the key is to show that United's youth team consistently does well in the Youth Cup and other competitions.
If it happens year-in, year-out you are likely to produce 1 or 2 on a regular basis.
The best example I can think of is Middlesbrough and I've no idea how they've competed in Youth Cups etc.
But their ability to bring players through - and players of very high quality - on a regular basis has been outstanding.
There's no reason why a city like Sheffield shouldn't be emulating that.

We reached the Quarter Finals in 2007 and we got FOUR Premier League/Championship quality players out of that team.

Sheffield United: Hernandez, Walker (Boden), Chapman, Mellis, Wedgbury, Lowton (Okoko 82), Askham, Quinn, Abdi (Eagers 68), Naughton, Tahar

The problem as ever is that we don't keep them. If we could just get a couple of first team seasons before cashing in, that would be an improvement and we may start to climb again.

I think all the "Development Squad" will be around 22 or 23 next season. If they're not ready to challenge for a place in Third Division team by that age, I don't see much point in persevering with them. Walker and Naughton were both Championship regulars at 18 and 20.

Anyone know if there's any coverage on t'internet for this? Villa had a live text commentary thing going which was good. They had a blades-player-like video, but you needed to be a subscriber.

Possibly the best you will get is Foxy's twitter feed on the home page.

I actually felt it was the least convincing performance I have seen this season, I have missed the cup games previously but have seen them 7 or 8 times on a Saturday. There were times when the players seemed to be trying to do too much as individuals. The biggest plus for me was George Long who commanded his box and caught or punched everything that came in.

Long had a very good game. He looks comfortable in the net. I say play him instead of flappy in the net

I'd agree to be honest. As I said on twitter, we seemed no where near as sharp as usual and didn't impose ourselves/use the ball half as well as normal.

Wouldn't say it was a poor performance, just less impressive than multiple other performances this year :)

Great result though!

MotM for me with Long not far behind in the 2nd half, get both in Satdi.

What a numpty "look at me" ref though

Yep thought he was poor and led to Whitehouse's second yellow by letting two or three wild challenges by Villa players in the preceeding 30 seconds go when any one of them should have led to a freekick our way.

I'd have been annoyed at going with that challenge to be honest.

It was a bit daft in the situation, but it looked to me like he played the ball in what was a controlled, but hard (and therefore wild looking) challenge. I know I'd have definately argued it anyway :D

He was a bit stupid taking his shirt off though after the goal. If he hadn't he'd still have been on the pitch

Definately, he's got to learn from that.

Interesting game, two things stood out for me.
Firstly, not many of our players will make it as first teamers beyond Maguire, Harriot and possibly Long.
Secondly, Pembo obviously has some quality managerial skills. He's got a team of mainly steady players, with some good players, playing football as an organised unit.
Looks to me to be management material or at least first team coach material. Very impressive.

As a first time visitor to see this side, I knew nothing much about our players apart from Long and Maguire and Harriott. I siad to my lad i liked the look of our number 8 (whitehouse) and our number 4, who was that please? We also thought Long looked very comanding.

Number 4 was Harriot
