This is all a bit of a pipe dream considering we’ve got to beat Man City but I think it’s a good idea.

As it stands Sheffield United have earnt £900k
The FA cup semi final losers are set to receive £500k so a guaranteed £1.4m.

Now I know football players get paid a lot of money even at the “unfashionable” Sheffield united, the FA cup runners up are set to receive £1m so Personally if I was a chairman I’d be telling the players that £1m will be shared equally amongst the squad and back room staff and office staff etc, a quick Google says we employ 96 staff, I’d presume it’s more than that but let’s go with 96 anyway which would give each employee £10.4k each. That’s big money for Sandra who washes the kit or young Ben working in the ticket office… like I say we’ve got to beat Man City anyway but it’s a good idea I think, didn’t Chris Wilder demand something similar when we last got promoted to the premier league? That was a rumour going around at the time anyway.

Profit sharing with employees is hardly a new concept, but in my experience has a really beneficial effect on the business.

Definitely. At our place the profit share gets dished out equally and not pro rata to salaries. It was the higher paid members of staff who suggested that, which gave me a very warm feeling.

Considering we lost 20 million in our last promotion season and our wage bill is obviously higher than that one even with parachute payments any profit to share is about as likely as us beating Manchester City then Manchester United or a high flying Brighton

We lost £20m mainly because of the promotion bonuses which we'd have paid out of the first instalment of the TV money. Underlying performance was much better than that.

Players get ridiculously well paid for what they do. Clubs lose money, to the point where we haven't been able to pay people what we owe them. The squad have already been paid handsomely. I don't think they should get extra for this, other than what's in their contract.

Give a bonus to the staff - fair enough.

And I'd guess that re-negotiating the outstanding transfer payments means we owe more, not less. I can't imagine Liverpool have said "you're right, he's not scored many and he's been injured a lot - have 50% off"

Its one thing which really hasn’t moved with the times.

Back in t’day you would receive 1m+ for reaching an FA cup final but I’m talking 20-30 years ago! It could change a club’s fortunes completely and it meant so much to the club.

Now 1m barely covers the squad’s weekly wages.

that would be unusual for a football club to have some sort of debt

believe man utds managed debt is 1.2 billion so I dont think we need worry

Agree with the sentiment but if we didn't offer big bonuses then we'd struggle to sign anyone.
It's the players that have the biggest effect on bringing in the most income, hence why they are given the incentive bonuses.

Yes, true - I was more referring to the idea that "we've had an unexpected windfall, so give it to the players".

I'm all for players pay being performance / bonus related. That should be written into their contracts, where possible.

The players are on fabulous salaries already and we are in a financial mess so every penny earned needs to clear debt really

Key question in my mind is whether £1m shared out amongst the players or wider staff represents a genuine incentive for the players to excel. If it does, offer it; if it doesn’t, as I suspect, distribute some of it to those behind the scenes after the event.
