I hope we get Chorley away.

Coming in your ears.

I was the secretary for the 1981-82 season too and attended Friendlies League meetings at Trippet Lane every month. I remember Blackstock also Claymore Swords, Target (players often met at the pub in Hyde Park Flats and I remember drinking with a few of them there), Mansel (there was player who was a nasty show off who teased our team until one of our players punched him- the ref didnt even send him off!) and Red Grouse. I remember the 1979-80 season better than in 1981-82 and in 1982-83 cos playing in an adult football league for the first time was an eye-opener for me also in 1981-82 and in 1982-83 I was often going to York for weekends to see my then girlfriend and often taking the day return on the train from York to Sheffield on Saturdays so the recollection of our opponents were not really sticking in my mind. The club withdrew from the Friendlies League midway in the 1983-84 season cos we were short of players. In the mid 1980s the club played on Sundays in the Sinatras League but I wasnt the secretary. My Norwich mate who stayed over at my house for this weekend (we were at the Sty yesterday!) recalled watching me play for Sheffield Deaf somewhere in the Rotherham area in November 1986 (the previous day we beat Sunderland 2-1, David Frain scoring a superb winner). I remember the Sunderland game but not that Sinatras League match!

Wow !! What a memory SB, a lot better than mine that's for sure. Our first season in the league, I think we finished third. We were going great guns until we played The Blackstock who were also unbeaten and they tonked us 10 - 1 which was a right downer.
Firth Derihon (now Firth Rixon) had five or six good years in the Friendlies League. As a factory team we had a good financial backing from the company but we started to struggle to get eleven players each week and the decision was taken to wrap up the team in the mid -eighties.
I started going back to The Lane on Saturday afternoon and played Sunday mornings instead for the Crown at Brightside (Bronco Layne's pub) in the Rotherham Sunday League. From 1987 to1989, I started playing Saturdays again for Forgemasters. Great days.

Would love it if Sheffield FC got to the first round one year and we drew them at Bramall Lane

I have a good drink with Frainy sometimes, nice bloke.

BBC have rights on the FA Cup draw and have decided to put it back on a Monday evening like it used to be. On BBC2 about 7ish I think.

In the proper olden days, it used to be on the wireless (that's not broadband kids) at 11am on Monday morning. There'd be pictures in the papers of giantkilling teams all sat round a crystal ball set, waiting to find out through the crackle who they'd drawn next.

Blyth Spartans, cause it's a cool name. I'd need Google to tell me where in the country they are though!

They're in Blyth, happy to help :) Their biggest win in the FA Cup was in the late 70s, away at Stoke City in the 3rd Round, who were at least in the second tier then. Despite our undistinguished modern day cup record, even we never sank quite that low.

They took Wrexham to a 5th round replay in 1978. That's the farthest a non league team has got since the cup assumed its present form in the 1920s. All other non league teams getting that far lost in the first game.

Just looked it up and that was the same season, the game after. Stoke had just dropped from the First Division. Blyth have a pretty good FA Cup record:-

  • 1971–72 Round 3: Blyth Spartans 2–2 Reading
  • 1977–78 Round 5: Wrexham 1–1 Blyth Spartans
  • 1977–78 Round 5 (replay): Blyth Spartans 1–2 Wrexham
  • 1995–96 Round 1: Bury 0–2 Blyth Spartans
  • 1997–98 Round 1: Blackpool 4–3 Blyth Spartans
  • 2008–09 Round 2 (replay): Blyth Spartans 1–0 AFC Bournemouth
And people say I have too much time on my hands.....

I would like most of them. Most of them would be grand. The ones to avoid:

3 Barnsley
4 Bradford City
5 Bristol City
11 Chesterfield
17 Doncaster Rovers
24 Mansfield Town
25 Milton Keynes Dons
32 Peterborough United
36 Preston North End
43 Swindon Town
45 Walsall

Anyone else is fine

They were unlucky not to win the 5th round tie at Wrexham. Blyth were winning 1-0 when Wrexham were taking a corner in the last minute. The keeper caught the cross comfortably but the ref ordered the corner kick to be re-taken because the corner flag wasnt in the right place. Wrexham equalised with a header by Dixie McNeil from the re-taken corner kick. Blyth lost in the replay!

Bristol Rovers away would be my pick. 40 minutes on the train, and a day on the cider on Bristol harbourside is always a pleasure.

Forest Green Rovers away would be my second choice.

There's some selfish bleeders on here:D Chezzie away so we can get revenge, and i can try and get a ticket for our end this time:D
