FA Cup - Does it deserve our respect?

League still comes first, really, but at 40/1 I'd roll the dice if injuries and suspensions aren't a problem.

Without doubt yes, but depends on the opposition. I would still expect us to field a reserve side for Fylde. But then take it from there if we progress.

In recent seasons , CW has played the 2nd eleven in cup games + asked those players to impress him sufficiently to earn consideration for a start in the league eleven.
They have conspicuously failed to do so - which is , as CW has stated , difficult to comprehend.
After all , we would like our 2nd eleven to be operating at a level such that they can replace an injured or suspended member of the starting eleven without losing too much quality.
One if the reasons this is hard to achieve is the lack of opportunity for fringe players to get a full competitive game.
The 2nd eleven should be used in the cup + they should be champing at the bit to perform well.
If they can't overcome Fylde , our squad is truly lacking depth + needs sorting out n the JTW.

The second string are almost all fine individually to replace an injured or suspended player in the first team. Playing the whole lot together isn't the same at all which is why they've been crap every time we've done it. Wilder is a bit thick if he can't comprehend why.

We couldn't overcome Barnet last season, but Freeman was fine whenever he played in the league and Cranie was excellent when he actually fitted into the system with the first team rather than being positionally all over the place with a bunch of strangers in the cup. Marvin Johnson was complete gash on all occasions, but you can't have everything.

Even he had his moments – WBA probably his best performance.

I think Wilder accepted in either the Barnet or Sunderland post-match interviews that too many changes together does present challenges. I’d keep the changes to maybe 5 max and go with something like this.

Baldock Basham Jags O’Connell Osborn
Lundstram Besic Fleck
Sharp Mousset

The 6 of the first XI we retain are for me the ones that are the fittest ones in the side, with the exception of Mousset who probably benefits from continuing to build up his stamina. They will also help to keep the overall shape – it’s extremely tough to get us to play our style when we switch Basham and JOC for Jags and Bryan for example.

Last season worked out well but if our reserves win next month, do we approach the fourth round differently, if we’re up to say 32+ points?

Absolutely not. Why should we want to try to win anything ever?

I think people might be overlooking the fact that we aren’t contractually obliged to play overlapping cbs in FA cup games with reserve players. What’s the point in asking Jags and Bryan to fit seamlessly into that role when they’re so unsuited to it?

With our squad looking like it currently does, i’d be far more tempted to play a 4-4-2 against lower league opponents to give our first team an extra week off.

12 - 15 points has us safe but we'll do better than that.
Should give the FA cup real effort, love to be there on cup final day. We'd all get tickets an' all.
Saucepan lid on us 'eads and tin foil round us ears, COYRAWW.

Yes absolutely we should .. fucking hate all this degrading of the oldest cup competition in the football world . In the past we’ve had some fantastic & memorable cup runs I’d like to see another !

Taking nothing for granted but aren’t we in a position to give this a real go.

I agree. It is about time we won something decent.

With our Premier League safety almost assured for another season, why not give it a good go. It would be good to get that Wembley monkey off our back as well.

Is there anybody still alive, who witnessed our last FA Cup triumph in 1925?

I guess we didn’t show it too much respect. Not a good table to be top of.

Except you might as well give the cup to Liverpool now Hartley, save a lot of time.

Liverpool will prioritise the League and Champions League over the FA Cup and will more than likely continue to play the kids. They are definitely beatable, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them lose at Bristol City or Shrewsbury.

Those the kids that mullered Everton YB ?, Clean sweep across the trophy board this season, can't see anything else, much as it grieves me to say it.

I didn’t see the match, but from what I heard on the radio Everton had some decent chances. It was only 1-0, hardly a hammering.

We ought to put out a team at Millwall capable of winning.

That means a different team to yesterday.

And then try to win.

Hopefully a couple of new signings play.

But hopefully with a loud and clear "FFS, no replays" message.....

Nah, there is always a chance...Think Wimbledon. The cup is renown for upsets, and we are due a win.

That was back in the day Hartley, although I say it through gritted teeth, I think this Liverpool side may turn out to be the best side ever seen in the Premiership> This season it is Liverpool and the rest.

But hopefully with a loud and clear "FFS, no replays" message.....

No replays after the fourth round, it wouldn’t be the end of the world if we had to bring Millwall back to the Lane. But ideally we’ll play a very strong side and beat them at the den.

I think we should start to take this seriously.

On the assumption that none of the replays yield upsets and likewise all the Premiership sides win out, the last 16 will include 11 PL teams of which we would be one.

So almost half the division gone.

Apart from against Liverpool where we were below par, we have acquitted ourselves well against all we have played.

If the draw is kind and some of that very top teams do for each other, then we could be in with a shout.

Yes, Chris has to take team selection seriously but how often do you have a chance to win something? And for once we are in a position where we can take on teams with no fear. So why not give it a go?
