Exercise Bike At Pitchside?

Bolton had them for years with Sam.

Quite obviously they are there for warmups.

It's a more recent trend, as FB says, to aid in warmups.

I think it was due to the bogginess of the side of the pitch meaning they couldn't sprint as hard as they normally would. The exercise bike gave them a chance to warm their legs up a different way.

Could also be used for warm-downs; pretty much every NHL game has the players using exercise bikes to warm-down post-game.

Why do people use the term 'warm-downs' and not 'cool-downs'?

Why do clubs talk of 'loaning' a player when they are actually borrowing.

Why - in mixer desks for recording etc. - do they use a 'fader' when it can move the volume up as well as down?

Life is very confusing....

Was watching Ward do this as it enthralled me more than the footy. I worked out he had got to Barnsley :P

But still, surely him running would have stretched him more.

Probably... but the side of the pitch was awful. Whether you intend to or not, you're going to be more careful running on a surface that is mainly mud and so won't push yourself as hard in the warm up.

I also wondered whether it was some sort of reaction to the amount of hamstring strains we seem to be suffering from, particularly with players coming off the bench (Camara and Ward had their hamstrings strapped up again).

It's common in Aussie Rules aswell, due to the rolling subs rule (interchanges or whatever) they often have bikes and physios massaging/stretching players between coming off and on. I'd suggest its a warm down for the players coming off more than a subs thing.

Wardy and camara had tight hamstrings as Linz mantioned and when I tote my hamstring the physio persisted on a excersise bike being the best way to stretchand warm up the muscle even more testing than running so I was told. I believe this is why an exercise bike was at the side of the dugout however I still found running better for my leg than biking !

Surely Wardy would need stabilizers.

It was wired up to the floodlights. Times are hard and we're skint.

That's just rubbish.

It's wired to the pie warmer-upper. Pray you've got somebody with fast legs on it, like Ward or Geary. They generate a lot of electricity, and therefore your pie will be a hot one. Get somebody who just lopes along, like Gruffalo Glen, and your pie will be merely luke warm.

I've seen them in the Rugby, both Union and League.

Great idea as it gets the muscles warm.

Considering the number of injuries we've had this year I think anything that we can do to minimise injuries like muscle pulls and strains is a great idea!

I'm just surprised its taken us so long to start doing this

They clearly didn't work as Ward was shattered by the time he came on!

Was reading away with great interest until it was mentioned that the sidelines were a bit boggy for sprinting

"what's happened to the bloody Desso!"

I'm a tit.
