JCR put more than two decent crosses in..and when he moved more central 2nd half he caused havoc..their big CB's( was it four Cb's at the end?) didn't know what to do

I would disagree. JCR's distribution is borderline terrible. On the ball he was amazing, one of, if not THE best i've ever seen him play. His crossing needs improvement. When he puts power on the ball he seems to scuff it and it just spins over the bar. When he "dinks" it, it's catching practice for the GK. His drilled crosses are much better.

If I was Adkins I would say "Drill it, cut it back or shoot".

On that performance though, he definitely has a major role to play this season.

Agree with all the above, but then we did discuss it all at length during the game and on the train afterwards. Added to that, you were unlucky enough to hear my expert analysis on the half-time dancing girls (The Poshettes?), not to mention our sheer bewilderment regarding the half-time entertainment involving bright yellow wheelie bins and a giant skip, again bright yellow.

And really, what were those mascots all about? A white rabbit with a giant fucking carrot and two knock-off Bob-the-Builders?

Indeed – I'm struggling to remember which are my own views of the game and which I've nicked...

The Poshettes – shittest name for a cheerleading group since the Bladettes.

Can't disagree with anything LoughboroBlade says above but here are my ratings, for what it's worth:

Howard 8: one superb reaction save, one shot down his throat and a goal he could do nothing about. Strange that he's stopped kicking for touch when we're a goal up...

Freeman 8: perhaps stood off his man a bit too much for the goal but he'd been isolated after we lost possession in a dangerous area. Faded after the break but was generally excellent both in and out of possession.

Edgar 9: pretty much faultless but for the one hospital pass in the first half. A commanding centre half, one we've been missing for too long.

Collins n/a: looked decent until he went off

McEveley 5: it's all been said already but he's an accident waiting to happen. Looks low on confidence to me.

Scougall n/a: one decent run before he took a whack clearing up after Freeman's error.

Basham 7: one woeful 30 yard effort aside he kept it simple alongside Baxter.

Baxter 7: some good, some bad (look before you pass, Jose!) but a well taken goal. It's been said frequently but he looks far fitter.

Adams 8: some non-league touches and some poor decisions but he's got some serious potential. Frightened the life out of their back 4 whenever he ran at them, I think three ended up in the book for pulling him back.

Sharp 7: some decent link up play and his understanding with Sammon is really encouraging. Unlucky to see some decent efforts blocked by last ditch tackles.

Sammon 9: two goals, some great link up play - should have the #9 shirt. Feed the fish...

Subs:
Campbell-Ryce 7: final ball as variable as ever but his willingness to work back was refreshing - there was one spell in the second half where JCR won the ball down by our corner flag before some slick passing saw him almost clean through...before he mis-hit a Hollywood pass straight out of play. His pace frightened the life out of their left back

K Wallace 7: solid enough but McEveley's jitters meant that he occasionally rushed things. Had a considerable amount of defending to do with Adams in front of him and picked up a booking for a classic pub league tackle.

J Wallace 8: the central midfielder we've been missing. Great range of passing, good engine and a football brain. Baxter's goal was all about him.

Sundries:
Great Northern Hotel 1: dreadful pint in a dead atmosphere. Poured half of it away.
The Brewery Tap 8: Oakham Ales and a beer called Triple B on tap. Winner.
Peterborough chippy 0: who shuts a chippy at 5.45pm? Wankers.
Charters (the Barge) 7: decent post match ale but £3.30 a bottle for takeaway is a bit steep
Great Northern Trains 2: Gordon the Green Engine got us back to London...eventually.

I thought his distribution was good actually, he kept possession really well for the team on the whole and a lot of our attacking play went through him.
When he moved into the middle he showed Baxter/Bash how to control the area by keeping possession and setting up play.

He put in a lot of varied crosses last night, and I agree the most effective were drilled across the six yard box ( Sammon was inches away from finishing one near the end, kicked the post in frustration!)
Think we've said it before but if every ball in was a bit better he'd have played his career in the Champ at least!

All abaht opinions :D

What are the chances I can get away tickets if I have a bog-standard membership card? Are they generally sold-out by the time the loyalty bonus members have bought their allocation?

I don't have a membership (yet) and had no issues getting a Peterborough ticket. You'll generally find people willing to help in here before big/popular games too.

I can see difficulties getting tickets for Chesterfield, Blackpool, Southend and possibly one or two more. The rest shouldn't be a problem.

Music to my ears. Appreciate the reply. I feel a few away days coming up. Thanks

It was a game won comfortably in the end, but which should have been much more comfortable than it was. That is not to say Posh were a poor side, but they are a mid-table outfit on this showing who at times gave us so much space to play it was unreal.

Attacking wise we were a real threat, some excellent movement from Sharp and The Fish, JCR was excellent when he came on despite the patchy quality of his final ball. Adams is an undoubted talent but miles off the finished article.

The defence still needs adding to, Edgar looks a good addition overall but we'll need better than Collins or McEveley to partner him. Jay is a steady left back but no more than that, and if we are to challenge he needs to be a backup option rather than a starter. Freeman was tidy in the main but miles off the quality of Brayford.

Central midfield also concerned me, for all his ability on the ball Baxter doesn't work in a two, we can be easily overrun and expose the defence. If James Wallace can stay fit I think he and Basham would be a formidable unit and as Wallace showed with the third goal we'd still have attacking options.

Not getting too worked up, but it was a good early season performance overall with plenty of scope for improvement. There also seems to be a really good team spirit which I never detected last year. If we can keep this attacking intent while keeping a tighter defence then I would expect us to challenge for the top two.

We were analysing this in some detail before kick off, and looking at the back of his shirt we learned Peter Burrows was his name. Clever stuff.

(Bob the Builders: I think they're sponsored by a construction firm.)

...I quite liked the 'posh lady' with top hat and diamond cane...lovely smile :D

Agree with all this.

Bookings. Good point. I'm pretty sure that happened more than once, and of course this has to affect the rest of their game.

What a great move that was - but I think any Hollywood executive (even one used to commissioning films about unicorns) would've rejected the script about the imagined/fantasized destination for that pass as too fanciful.

Posh was my local club in my youth, and in those days, the mascot used to be Mr Posh, with top hat and cane, but also with spats and a monocle.

It was ironic really, for a town that had little more than brickworks and a railway engine repair shed, I doubt anybody upper class ever went near the place, except passing through on the train.

the biggest improvement recently (i haven't been btw) seems to be the overall attitude . .vibe if you like. normally we'd have gone one up.. shut up shop and let two in in the last five minutes seeing as we had taken all the strikers off and started defending too deep.. this year it seems completely different.. when we get the beard and done back we will take some stopping

We were a bit deep but I think we have to be with playing a counter style and 2 in midfield. At least we are still protecting the defence, which with McEveley in it needs some protecting lets face it.

Think the Wallace brothers (J & K) both put in a claim for a shirt. Kieron looks more solid than JM and James really made the third goal all on his own. And his energy and strength makes him perfect for a 2 in midfield. But in fairness Jose run the show and without Basham we haven't got that defensive mindedness in midfield and would be cut open at will IMO. James is just going to have to settle for an impact off the bench for the next few weeks, best thing for him in fairness - building slowly.

Michael Turner would be an incredible signing, I'd make him captain straight away. Jay can be club captain but it doesn't mean he needs to play every game...
We'd look stronger with a back 4 of: Freeman - Turner - Edgar - K Wallace than what we have currently. Harris to come back in when fit.

We really have got a squad of talented players and now the shackles are off they're showing it.

The first game is just a distant memory. Already.

EDIT: their right back was absolutely wank. Wonder if they want Alcock back?

And as much as Long's keeping this was the issue at Gillingham. We were off the pace all over the park. That's what I meant by sometimes a big defeat is easier to remedy if it's just down to one systemic or organisational issue.

Alex Davey, the Chelsea lad?
I was talking to some Posh fans after the game and to be fair they said all four defenders were Centre Backs...square pegs an all that...

Yes mate.
That left back who went off, Nlthe was half decent but once he went off that was it. They offered nothing from full back.

I remember Nlthe being superb at the lane last season. Hardly let Flynn have a kick. I don’t see Posh being promotion contenders (probably somewhere between 10th-15th I reckon) but it’s a satisfying win nonetheless.

That feel good factor seems to be back in a big way now. Hope we can keep it going against Blackpool on Saturday. If we can be right up there when the likes of Brayford, Harris, Flynn and Done return, we will surely take some stopping. Early days though but there are real signs of promise starting to appear.

Jay McCatastrophy seemed a little flustered at left back but woeful when he had to take over from Collins. Peterborough could have scored easily from 5 of his blunders. If he was going to have another performance similar to many of those last season, I'm glad that Nigel Adkins got to see it for himself before the transfer window closes.

Scored easily from 5 of his blunders?

Again I think McEveley's mistakes gets noticed more than other's, not sure why. There were quite a few times where we gave away possession dangerously, many players were guilty in this respect. McEveley was as well, on 34 minutes. It lead to a free kick. Just before half time he also lost a header.

In the second half I noticed the one time he sliced a clearance up in the air, then headed it away. Bit later he tried an easy ball to K.Wallace which went out for a throw in. On 24 minutes he went for a header that he should have left for Baxter. Five minutes before the end he lost another challenge, which lead to a shot over.

Otherwise he was ok. He usually passes well, even when under pressure. 6/10

Peterborough's biggest chances - their goal when Freeman was unable to stop the tricky scorer and Edgar, our second defender, didn't help him. They had a free header from a free kick. On the stroke of half time Edgar back heeled a shot to their forward who had only the keeper to beat 6 yards out. Howard made a great save when a deep cross found their right winger (should Adams have tracked back, or K.Wallace moved over sooner?). James Wallace gave them a golden chance right before the final whistle when he chose not to clear.

I also want a new centre half as I think a stronger, more commanding type, maybe quicker as well, will give us more than McEveley and Collins' composure and experience. But there's a reason why Adkins has shown quite a bit of faith in both and let's be fair and objective when analysing their performances.

I've started a thread with this. Hope that's ok.
