We were at a party in Cheshire on Friday night and I got talking to these 2 blokes about football (they're both ManUre fans) and when I told them that I am a Blade they said "oh a 'mate' of ours used to play for them"......."Reg Mathewson"
I said I thought I recognised the name but.....
"He's in his 70's now, used to play for Chester" (which is probably why he lives in Cheshire)!
Anyway I asked my Dad yesterday morning if he knew him and it turns out that they were friends ("knocked about together") when they were (much) younger and were both at Bramall Lane at the same time!
Small world eh?

I've since Googled him and seen that he is from Sheffield and his nephew played for the Pigs!

Reg - good bloke , good footballer , steady .

Good player if my memory serves me well, I think in old money played at 'right half'. glad he is still good strong.

No it wasn't at Dawn and Ashley's, but my Jag looked distinctly out of place surrounded by all the Range Rovers!
It was a good night though and genuinely nice people...... for ManUre fans!!!! :D

Reg Matthewson was a decent player. He was around in that transitional period for our defence.

Thinking back to the old 235 system John Harris had just broken up the Coldwell, G. Shaw, Richardson, J. Shaw, Summers defence and for several years until the Badger, Hemsley, Hockey, Colquhoun, Flynn / Powell formation came along Gentleman John experimented with quite a few players. Matthewson was one of those. Len Badger was already established but others included Mallender, Munks, B. Wagstaff, Bernard Shaw.

I posted this some time ago but remember as a kid in school holidays walking up Myrtle Road to see us train at the old Ball Inn ground and Reg Matthewson stopped to give us a lift. Top guy.

Think we sold him to Fulham for about £30,000 about January 1968(?). Maybe that money was just enough to buy some kid from Watford. We've a lot to thank Reg for.

He wasn't having regular starts in the opening month of the 1967/68 season and wanted to put in a transfer request but preferred to wait until after we had won a match. He put in the request after we beat Newcastle 2-1 in September 1967
