Europa League?

If the league is concluded in line with what Europe want then would relegation and promotion still happen? As under this system Villa would be relegated as they won't reach 2 points. That is completely unfair on Villa who would be relegated despite not being able to play their game in hand which could have saved them. The only fair way to conclude the league is to complete it. However if this league is still going on but the Europa league has started then this is probably the only fair way to pick the the teams for the Europa league. Personally I would just extend everything to conclude it all. Then decide how to get it back on track after that.

That's a good point, Villa could argue they've been punished for reaching the League Cup final. There are no guarantees they would've beaten us, but it's still one less match they've had an opportunity to pick up points.

I think that clubs should have at least played the same amount of games. Even if it’s just making provisions for the games in hand to be played that’s better than nothing. I know it’s supposed to be an average over each teams games but there are so many variables in football that even one game can skew the data.

As you say the fairest way to do it is to complete the games.

I think we will see a change in the laws from now on, where the clubs agree before the season starts on a system to determine standings should anything like this happen again.

That's the problem, football and sport in general can't work with indefinite timescales and hope. It will get to the point where football will just be played anyway and I can't see that being more than a matter of months away.

It's almost as if people are having to get their head around no certainties for a while...

Quote from UEFA: "If a domestic competition is prematurely terminated for legitimate reasons in accordance with the above conditions, Uefa would require the National Association concerned to select clubs for the Uefa club competitions 2020/21 based on sporting merit in the 2019/20 domestic competitions."

I read that as UEFA coefficients would not come into it, as it clearly states domestic competitions - English League and Cups.

No FA Cup would mean Europa League is places 5th and 6th, and 7th as well as City won the League Cup.

No Man City in Europe next season would have 5th place as Champions League, with the Europa League places being 6th, 7th & 8th.

That's how I understand it anyway.

I remember an Italian team getting banned from the champions league not so long ago but was ok to play in the Europe.

Wouldn't hold your breath on Man city not playing in Europe, an Italian team got banned from playing in the champions league the other year but ok to play in the europa league instead.

Until the appeal is heard they are not banned. Who knows if or when an appeal will be heard

City were banned from European Competitions, not from the Champions League. Source

Either way, as Berkshire Blade says, with the appeal in place they aren't banned.

Exactly, who says that a season has to start in August and finish in May?
Restart the season as soon as it’s safe to do so.
Complete all the league matches (5 weeks) then the FA cup and play-offs (2 weeks), then Europe if possible (3 weeks). Then restart the next season.
If the next season ends up straddling the Euro’s next year, so what?
They will be messing with the schedule for the Qatar World Cup anyway, so what does it matter if next season can’t run to the traditional schedule?

Tbf there’s a few arguing our case.

If it came down to ending the season as it is, the fairest but not perfect way would be to at least allow the four clubs with games in hand to play them. That would be two games, and call it from there.

It is a shame though. From a football perspective and putting aside the bigger picture of the devastating consequences of the pandemic, the Blades I think were in with a genuine chance of pushing for the Champions League.

There’s a sentence I thought I’d never say!

It's one big freakshow. In the Netherlands, they just decided to hand out the European places according to the current standings, but there's no champion. But while using the table for the European places, they don't use it for the promotion / relegation so no relegation and promotion.

Which is extremly cruel, because the two teams at the bottoms are basically doomed to relegate anyway and the two teams in the first division were like 11 & 7 points in front of the rest or something like that.

To top it off, our FA first said that they couldn't decide so they let the clubs vote, then the vote was 16 for relegation, 9 against and 9 non-voters. When the vote result was out the FA decided that there would be no relegation.

I don't think England can do worse than our FA but it still shows that it's gonna be a big mess.

Agreed.

The whole ethos behind "We're going abroad" is that a select few lucky Blades will finally get to travel to see us play in European competition on foreign soil. If travel bans are still in place, which is highly likely, we'd basically be watching us play the likes of BATE and Ludogorets on telly with tumbleweeds blowing through the stands.

Can't say I am excited about playing Braga in empty grounds. Would just be a money grab. And Europa League doesn't have much of that
sounds like Hillsborough.

They've basically argued for us, which fair play.

I'm not sure if I'd rather we

- Played to the end of the season (behind closed doors) and miss out on Europe by a point

- Qualify via some blokes calculator and a pdf file defining 'sporting merit'.

"I'm all for any solution that sees villa relegated " - spoken like a true fan, would we be so accommodating - relegate Wednesday or a Europa league qualification?

They actually really wind me up as a fan base. So fucking arrogant, even before they bought success.

But they have 4 top players that carried them through the extra games. World class players!!!

Eh? Apologies if i've misunderstood but haven't next season's Dutch European participants just been decided by current league position, not UEFA coefficients?

Null and void is a disgrace. You are where you deserve to be at this stage of the season and pretty much end up in a similar position according to historical data.

Norwich getting a pass into next season is so undeserved as is our denial into european football and Liverpool's title.

I hope the Dutch decision does not influence the PL to follow suit.

The Dutch decision wasn't completely null and void, European places have been allocated based on the current table, even though relegation and promotion won't happen. In their case no european places would have changed based on PPG but in the PL's case they would have to take PPG into account putting us into 6th and a Europa league place. So if the PL does follow suit we won't be denied European football. I think. Maybe.

They basically null & voided the second division (those teams can't relegate anyway) so they could not promote. Then they awarded the European places according to the rankings of the league table of our first division as it is right now. For the last European spot, one team played one game more than the team right below them, with a gap of 3 points, but the team below got a way better goal difference + should have played the dutch FA cup (winner gets Europa league ticket). The team with the game less is left with nothing.

Right now the 2 teams that should have been promoted and the team that loses out on a European league ticket will most definitely go to court. To top it off, the number 2 of our competition is also against the decision and are looking for their possibilities. Most likely their cases are not gonna hold on, since the rules gave our FA a pretty big margin and our judges are only gonna test the rules marginal.

But the situation with us here is even more worrying and about so much more money than in the Netherlands that I just don't see how this is gonna end without a dozen of law suits.

I don't know the rules the FA stated here, but for sure it's gonna be messy and a long process.

Bit of a double whammy for McCabe, this Prince business. He'd have been frothing at the mouth at the prospect of suing someone.

They could add the points per game so far to the current total for teams with games in hand. Not perfect and would result in an impossible result but other than declaring the game a draw it's as fair as can be I think.

Or maybe cancel the results from the round of games we missed?

But if you do that you've got 4 teams getting points when only 2 might have if the games were played. If its the difference between relegation then thats incredibly dodgy ground to be on.

Ultimately its the teams in the relegation zone that have the most to lose. For us, we're clearly playing in the next Premier League season whenever that might be. As others have said, European football might not be the same if we can't go as fans.
