Well, is there enough Championship experience in the squad/first team? Let's see shall we:

Player - Experience Y/N - Team played for in the Championship (C), Premier League (P/L) or Scottish Prem (S PL)

First team squad that played v's Northampton to clinch 2016 season:

Moore - Yes - (P/L) & (C) - Cardiff
Freeman - Yes - (C) - Forest & Derby
Basham - Yes - (P/L) & (C) - Bolton & Blackpool
O'Connell - Yes - (C) - Blackburn & Brentford
Wright - No
Lafferty - Yes - (S P/L) (C) & (P/L) - Celtic, Burnley & Rotherham
Coutts - Yes - (C) - Derby, Preston & Peterborough
Fleck - Yes - (C) & (S P/L) - Blackpool & Glasgow Rangers
Carruthers - Yes - (P/L) & (C) - Villa & MK
Sharp - Yes - (C) & (P/L) - United, Donny, Southampton, Forest, Reading & L**ds
Clark - Yes - (C) - Wolves, QPR, Plymouth, W******Y, Preston & Wigan

Bench

Long - No - United
Done - Yes - (C) - Barnsley
Hanson - No
Duffy - Yes - (C) - Scunthorp, Donny & Birmingham

Reserves/U21's/on Loan

Brayford - Yes + (C) & (P/L) - Derby & Cardiff
Hussey - Yes (C) - Coventry
Lavery - Yes - (C) - W******Y

Wallace - No
Wilson - No
Reed - No - United
Brookes - No
Hallam - No

Summer 2017 Signings
Thomas - Yes - (S P/L) - Motherwell
Evans - Yes - (P/L) & (C) - Man City, Norwich, United,
Stevens - Yes - (P/L) - Villa & Donny
Baldock - Yes - (C) - MK
Stearman - Yes - (C) & (P/L) - Leicester, Wolves, Ipswich & Fulham

Pretty conclusive IMO - WITHOUT any signings this summer, the team, barring ONE player all had experience in the Championship, Scottish Premier or Premier league. There's a reason United ran away with the league last year - it was already a Championship side in all but league position.

The coming season will be tougher, for sure, but to say 'We need Championship experience or we're going straight back down' is, evidently, bonkers.

Then, looking across the summer recruitment, thus far, you can see a trend developing - Experience of the Premier League(s) in 80% of our signings. if history echo's itself, the coming season could be very good indeed...

Just what we needed, another thread about the relative merits of our squad in the almighty championship.

Apologies if this format has been presented before - I've not seen it. I've seen plenty of threads stating 'this player has experience' or, 'that player played in the championship' but I've not seen the complete first team, that finished last season, presented in it's entirety with relevant info. to compare and discuss.

Also, I should amend my sentence 'There's a reason United ran away with the league last year - it was already a Championship side in all but league position.' to There're 2 reasons United ran away with the league last year - 1) it was already a Championship side in all but league position and 2) Chris Wilder & Alan Knill.

You confusing experience with actually playing for a club. Having said that, I think we're fine now.

Which of the 10, in that list haven't played in the Championship or Premier League? By my reckoning, they've all played in and therefore have experience of the Championship and or P/L.

Good post but it could be improved by putting the number of appearances.

And the SPL is L1 standard.

By that reckoning we should get DCL back as he's got premiership experience. What BushBlade said

Our players with noteworthy Championship experience are...

Stearman
Lafferty
Baldock
Basham
Coutts
Carruthers
Duffy
Sharp
Clarke
Evans

I'd say Stearman, Basham, Coutts, Sharp and Clarke are the ones with real good experience.

There's also Brayford but he's irrelevant.

I don't think you can really include in that list somebody who might have just made the odd appearance in that league years ago.

I think we're OK now we've got that key defensive signing. Generally quality is far more important than experience anyway. I just want us to sign more quality. Holmes fits the bill and Lenihan seems to as well.

I did realise that after reading the the initial response.

For clarity, combined Prem & Champ appearance figures:

Moore - 25
Freeman - 29
Basham - 117
O'Connell - 19
Wright - 0
Lafferty - 46
Coutts - 106
Fleck - 76 (8 in the Championship)
Carruthers - 46
Sharp - 271
Clark - 226

basham sharp and clarke have got the most experience out of them, coutts as well

Its a funny thing this "Championship experience" issue, Hanson for example has zero Championship experience as he's not played in that division, but he played against former England and Chelsea Captain, John Terry in the FA Cup. Terry himself having little Championship experience but for a loan move to Forest back in 2000.

I think when you talk about the Championship, the last 3-5 years has seen a huge change. Many sides have been in the Premier League or have big money owners now so there is a huge amount of money available and big money signings are being made by sides all over the division. There is a desperation in the division to bring in big names and pay big money for these players. Were seeing better quality players in the division. Players are fitter than they've ever been and players playing into their 30's and looking as sharp, if not sharper than their mid 20's.

Young British players released from foreign dominated teams like Man City, Liverpool, Man United etc as they don't make the grade, but are lured by big money AND first team football

If you're going to look at Championship experience as a benchmark, perhaps consistently playing there in the last 3 years would be the best way to sort the experience and quality issue.

Personally, i'm excited to see how we perform. Wilder has laid out a foundation at League one and he has a system which not only works, but players who've dropped out of the Championship (Billy, Fleck, Moore, Coutts, Basham and Freeman for example) are better now than they've ever been. These players are slotted in alongside the likes of Ched, Lavery, Wright, Clarke and Brooks whom could have big seasons as they've got something special about them. Then we have the new signings, not all will work out, like Hussey and Brayford, but i think given a Wilder preseason all of these have the best chance to succeed.

I think its early to say, but by Christmas we won't be talking of Championship experience, but "Wilder Experience

I'm more bullish than most about next season as the players you mention above, with the exception of Freeman who I've never rated due to his defensive ability, are as good as any in the Championship. I don't buy into this "big money" argument anyway. Crazy transfer fees doesn't necessarily mean better players, it just means that premier league rejects and foreign imports are costing more.due to transfer fee inflation. Take this Joao or whatever his real name was at the pigs. He was fucking shite.

Only saw him the once, in a friendly against Benfica. He gave a decent defence plenty to think about, but has done nothing since.

Very interesting and thanks for sharing.

I didn't actually realise how much experience at this level we had in the squad. I suppose fans can be so obsessed with the constant need to upgrade when sometimes you just need to take a step back and look at what we actually already have.

Not saying we don't need to bring in new players but it's always worth bearing in mind that we do have a very good group of players here at BDTBL under an extremely good manager.

All bodes well for the coming season.
