Today was the day when I passed through the threshold and realised that though it's by no means over, we're more likely to be relegated than we are to stay up.

So it got me thinking, what's to look forward to in the third division?

For me it's;

About 7 potential new grounds
Cheaper ticket prices
Less plastic fans
More real football grounds
Derby's with Rotherham and Chessy

Lot's more negatives, I now (I'd include playing the pigs in that), but anyone got any other positives to getting relegated?

UTB

monty and quinn will have to leave due to being bombarded by suitors seeing as they are too good for this level??.. might even make it worth it

Opportunity to rebuild. Character building. Cheaper football. Opportunity to visit grounds not been to for a long time. Chance of glory in Johnsons Paint Trophy. It doesn't hold the fear that lower league football used to.

The only fear is being stuck there or going down further.

We have to hope that we can do a Norwich. Or, and I hate to say it, a Leeds. Failing that, a Southampton. Norwich in particular show it doesn't have to be the end of the world - in fact it can be a springboard to move up with more confidence. Not that I want us to go down - just saying we could come back from it.

been there and below, so no fears from me, might be a blessing if it allows re building from ground up.
blades on league 1 tour 2011/2012
bring it on!!

The chance for a good clearout
New grounds
Cheaper prices
Facing teams we haven't played for a while

That's about it...

I don't actually give a shit if we go down, blessing in disguise if we do.

Look at the current squad if we went down;

GOALKEEPERS
•Steve Simonsen - GONE
•Mihkel Aksalu - GONE

•Richard Wright - crock, GONE
•Paul Crichton - FUTURE

•Stephen Jordan - big earner, injury prone, GONE
•Nyron Nosworthy - end of loan, GONE (thank fuck)
•Chris Morgan - League 1 will be his level, essential experience
•Johannes Ert - big earner, shit, GONE
l•Jean Calve - shit, GONE
•Andy Taylor - end of contract, GONE
•Joe Mattock - loan, GONE
•Shane Lowry - loan, GONE
•Robert Kozluk - end of contract, GONE
•Seamus Conneely - THE FUTURE
•Kingsley James - THE FUTURE
•Elian Parrino - loan, GONE
•Matthew Lowton - THE FUTURE
•Neill Collins - unfortunately contracted

MIDFIELDERS
•Nick Montgomery - too big for League 1, GONE
•Michael Doyle - contracted
•Mark Yeates - too big for League 1, GONE
•Lee Williamson - too big for League 1, GONE
•Ryan France - end of contract, GONE
•David Mcallister - THE FUTURE
•Daniel Philliskirk - Hopefully THE FUTURE
•Stephen Quinn - contracted

FORWARDS
•Darius Henderson - too big for League one, injury prone - GONE

We would get rid of the shite/BIG WAGE EARNERS and be able to build with the quality of youth and a little experience.

ANYONE ELSE SMELL A CONSPIRACY.......

Crichton - Future

What, for the retirement home? He's 42! And there's no way Ched Evans would stay with us in League One.

I think we're going to dip this season, let's hope we do a Sheff United 1988, rather than a Sheff United 1979. At least Micky Adams is more of a Bassett type than a Haslam.

New grounds would be the only plus from relegation as far I'm concerned.

wtf are you on? how can anybody draw any positives from going down??

Some of us remember, the last time, and the time before that...... erm and the time before that lol (old git or what!)

Yep, we had camaraderie and laughs, but believe me, spending 20 years in the shadow of the massive massive pigs was nothings to smile about. You reap what you sow though, so all those wanting Micky Adams, well done!

My first year as a Blade was 1979, so I know the bad times.......

Like a few others, today I went through the mental gate from believing we might be relegated, to believing we'll probably be relegated. It's not certain by any means, but for the first time today I reckon it's a probability. I didn't expect to get anything at Ipswich, but the team looked devoid of all hope today, and if they don't believe they can do it, it's unlikely that they will.

Adams looked helpless on the touchline. We have players most of whom have done OK at times in the past, either for us or for other clubs, yet every one of them looks completely out of form. The problem is zero confidence of course, but when you play OK and still get nothing that always hits confidence, and leads on to performances like we saw today (when we didn't play OK) and then it's very difficult to get a win from anywhere. With the discipline going as well at the end, it's looking bleak.

So having gone through the grim depression of that realisation, as I moped on the train home, I began to think about the prospect of next season in the third tier. Slightly to my surprise, I began to cheer up. Some different away days. The prospect of winning a few games. Lower prices. Standing on terraces. Fewer plastic fans. I remember last time we were in the third division, and I enjoyed it.

Sure, it would be embarrassing going down, but then I have to tell you, floundering around the bottom of the Championship doesn't exactly fill me with pride, and I don't see much prospect of doing anything else next season if we do stay up. The reality of the financial impact of being relegated from the Premiership seems to be that having a season or two in the third division is quite the thing these days for clubs like ours...

Don't misunderstand me - I don't want us to go down. In fact I desperately want us to stay up. It's just that - to my surprise - the possibility of being in the third division next season doesn't fill me with quite the dread that it did before I realised that it will probably happen...

Today has been a tipping point for me too - relegation is looking more likely than not.
But the really worrying thing is we will not bounce straight back like Norwich, there are some decent teams in league one as the owls are finding out.
While ever McCabe sits on his hands waiting for someone to come along and give him his 50M back then this club is screwed. And we don't even have the option of the cheats way out.

We lost 3 -0 not the 2 - 0 I expected.

Get over it.

UTB

Ipswich wasn't a pivitol game but 11th agaisnst Palace may be but only if Coventry and ourselves win next Saturday. If we lose and Palace beat Cov then will/can we catch them?

The third divisions the only division we haven't been champions of...
I suppose we could set that right.

Mate, dont kid yourself. Why not go the whole way and say.... "Yeah that Conference North, what a season, new grounds, fantastic prices, no plastic fans blah blah blah and the Blades were magnificent"

I look at the bigger picture.....Wednesday wont always be crap, they have no debt and now somebody putting money in. When they get it right - which they will, again generations of Sheffield fans will head up Penistone Road to Hillsborough. Pubs around town, schools all over the city etc etc will again be chirping with grunters taking piss.

And, dont kid yourself, the Blades side that Adams is 'building' will not do a Leicester or Norwich (or even a Leeds \ Forest).

We are going down faster than a spotty fat kid who somehow got his way with the class looker..

League 1 doesn't get paused for international weeks :)

And while searching for information on yesterdays game, i subconsciously clicked on league 1 to get what i needed. Nailed on now for sure.

Ertl is not a big earner. I know he is only on a basic of 2k per week as this was his stated salary for the credit check on his property's rental agreement. Although that is not to say he did not get a large signing-on fee.

How many Chief Execs in 3rd tier get paid as much as Birchy?

I imagine the top brass at Rochdale and Exeter will be looking for pay rises.

i must be ahead of the curve.. i reached this point weeks ago when we didn't get the dead cat bounce on MA's arrival..
btw thanks torrix.. you're post has cheered me up greatly this morning <ale>

Erm. Should you be disclosing that?

It will be a disaster if we are relegated.

Looking at our squad its a certainty as well.

Well done Mccabe..... what a complete arse youve made of our club.
