Most England players get slated when they play at the Lane (you ****ed it up for England, if the Nevilles can play for England etc etc) but I can remember 2 notable exceptions - Gazza (Spurs) and Ian Wright (Burnley). Both were given the bird during the game but got a standing ovation when they left the field.

Can anybody think of any others (excluding former players such as Kyle)?

Paul Robinson always made a point of clapping the Kop as he approached, which most fans appreciated despite the fact he played for Leeds (and latterly Spurs).

In years gone by there wasn't so much hatred in the game as there is now and I remember clapping opposition players without the threat of being filled in by fellow Blades. Tom Finney, Johnny Haynes, Bobby Moore ect spring to mind and as a young lad it was a joy to be able to see them all in the flesh.

Most goalkeepers have had generous applause over the years ie Gordon Banks, Pat Jennings, etc but one of the most memorable standing ovations for me wasnt an international at all and that was Steve Kabba who had a phenomenal performance for Grimsby then got subbed off wherein the whole ground stood and applauded. A few days later he signed for us.

Don't remember Wright getting any kind of ovation.

Only one I really remember was Gazza for Burnley.

as previously stated by the OP,
Yup remember that game well, gazza got a load of stick whilst playing during the game, but he got a a standing ovation going off, 1990 and young gazza's tears....then euro's 96 and that goal v Scotland...

Gazza took dog's abuse at BDTBL when he played for spurs in the early 90's. He got a standing ovation for Burnley, more out of sympathy than anything else. He put in one of the worst 20/30 minutes of football i've ever seen. He looked pissed. I remember him nearly setting us up with a awful back pass.

Played for Boro against us at the Lane in April 1998. I said after the match that I wouldnt have him in the World Cup squad

I took my daughter to this game (possibly her first), Gascoigne was probably the difference between the sides. We won 3-0.

Peter Withe, I remember coming home from work one satdi dinner time and saying to mum and dad when I got home "Right I'm off to Stoke to watch United", twas 1st game of that season, I drove down to Stoke, parked up and walked to the old Victoria ground to witness the mighty blades winning 3-1 I think and Withe scored a brace if I'm not mistaken. Always liked him plus I think the "Das Boot" producers modeled the U boat commander on him....

That last one's a joke right...ha ha ...Peter Withe...ha ha...you mean the same Peter Withe who got a proper standing ovation after scoring two for Birmingham against us at home while still being owned by us? And boy did he celebrate his goals...THAT Peter Withe?

I think he got that abuse because of some very disparaging comments that he made about us early on in the 1990-1 season.

But 10 years or so later, I think we'd all forgiven him somewhat and when he came to The Lane with Burnley he was applauded when taking a corner at the kop end. Mind you, it probably helped that we completely outplayed them that day and won 3-0. That sort of thing always makes you behave more charitably towards the opposition!

Remember that well ,what idiot gave him permission to play against us while on loan ,

It was 48 hours after the Old Trafford Semi v Newcastle, and we had a weakened team out with a few players who were still knackered and beat Boro without getting out of first gear, and Gazza was played off the park by Ian Hamilton. It was sad to see a great player on quite a steep decline.

The last couple of opposition players I’ve applauded off the park have been Cristian Eriksen and Ryan Sessegnon last season,

On wikipedia (never wrong) it says that when Withe left to join us it was the biggest wrench of his career! It was possibly more to do with leaving Aston Villa as opposed to the prospect of joining us but even so it doesn't sound like his heart was in it. I'm fairly sure that Vinnie Jones has said similar in his autobiography when he left Dirty Leeds for us.

Zola got the best one I can remember when he played for Chelsea in a pre season game. So much so, he looked visibly shocked as he walked off & sheepishly acknowledged it. It was Chris sutton’s first game for them & he was shite if I remember correctly.

This. Easily the best player I have ever seen live at the Lane. I'd give it to Ronaldo after seeing what he's done since, but that miss still makes me laugh so much...

Really? Paul Scholes? Paul Fucking Scholes? I’ve seen at least fifty better. Perhaps you’re a young ‘un but even then you must have seen Bergkamp and Cantona for example?

“Gazza” was a fucking disgrace. The illiterate pisshead tried to end Gary Charles’ career in an FA cup final and all the cunt could do was feel sorry for himself when he suffered a self-inflicted injury.

No respect. No applause. Fuck him.

Yes, Jones tried to belittle us in his autobiography. Claimed he won the MOTM every week. Lying twat!

You're right, sorry Pinchy, I lied. The best player I've ever seen at the Lane is actually a toss up between Nick Montgomery and Vinnie Jones. Happy now?

For the record, I don't recall Cantona or Bergkamp ever playing for England.

Kyle Walker got a great reception when he came back with Spurs as did Maguire when he came back with Leicester last season.

Not sure why Vinnie needs to be like that, he did a decent job for us even though he wasn't as popular wit the fans as he was at Leeds.

Scholes was a classy player who had all the midfield attributes you supposedly aspire to and should’ve had more England caps than Gerrard and Lampard. How he had 40 caps less than Lampard and 48 less than Gerrard is a crime in itself.

I remember early sixties when United played Chelsea. Hodgy got crocked and in those days the ref wouldn't stop play unless the ball was booted out, which rarely happened then. The exception in this game was Peter Bonetti, and he got a rousing round of applause for it, not only that game but every season after until we got relegated in 1968.

I don't doubt that. He was, however, overrated by the press and media sycophants purely because he played for their darlings. I'm astonished to hear anyone describe him as the best player they've seen at the Lane. It may be an age thing. I've not done the exercise and don't intend to but I doubt he'd be in my top hundred, if he appeared on the list at all. Another member of the Golden Generation.

I didn't realise it was so limited. In any event, I don't regard playing for England [certainly since 1980] as a quality mark. The two players I've mentioned were world class; Scholes was nowhere near, in common with the rest of the Golden [Rain] Generation.
