I'm gutted for the lad. He really ought to be involved in this year, and he was. He was well in contention, he ought to be enjoying every minute of the preparations and build up.

To have worked so hard to make this possible for himself, for us, for the whole club. He was instrumental. It's sad to think he might not get to be part of that now. What a player.
I’m not gutted for him. I’m just gutted how it’s all ended.

This is all his own doing. Idiotic.

We should have used him in part ex for Freeman and knocked a decent amount off the price. In todays market why would we let him go for free unless Wilder doesn't want him cluttering the place up...assuming JL is correct of course ?

Spoke to someone today and they said the club have given Duffy until noon on Thursday to find a new club, if not the club will mutually agree to terminate his contract so he can still sign with someone after the window closes. If he finds a club before then it will still be a free transfer.

Seems the bridge is burned, no way back
Sounds a lot like bullshit to me.

He’s not interested in moving to QPR

If he was going for free regardless they’d terminate his contract now 😂

Duffy has been instrumental and probably been our most important player, why shouldn’t he get more money or a longer contract?

Any player who is instrumental at their respective clubs would want and probably get the same thing. I find it very strange that we seem to be chucking away our key player from the last three seasons, for what would seem to be just another year or two extra on his contract and all for what.....nothing?

We aren’t the same team without Duffy and for me we will really regret the way this has panned out.

Wilder forced the boards hand when he wasn’t happy with the shenanigans behind the scenes so it would be a bit rich for Wilder to use the excuse of Duffy wanting extra assurances when he’s one of the main reasons we find ourselves where we are now.

...and before anyone else says it, nobody in our current setup will be able to play the Duffy role, we’re going to have to change how we play which as evidenced in recent seasons, we’ve really struggled to do.

Huge shame if true, I personally think Duff is a better all-round player than Freeman.

I agree, he was the key that unlocked so many defences over the past 3 years and we wouldn't be where we are now without him. Shame it's come to this but Wilder is 100% correct in not bowing to his demands. As the saying goes, all good things come to an end.

We might have given him more money and a new contract but he didn't earn it for himself.

He got a pay increase as a reward for being promoted/being instrumental etc, but then he went after more.

He's been at the club long enough to know how we do things under Wilder, and that behaviour won't fly at Sheffield United.

Wilder is in charge, he can go after new contracts because he's earned it. Duffy is an employee and needs to respect the club and the manager and his fellow players, who are all jointly responsible for our success and yet didn't go knocking on the door for a pay rise.

I'm gutted he's leaving but it sounds like he's been a right prat so I get it.

Sounds like driving from Liverpool to London each day for training might be quite the pain...

Oh I can image, you said they didn’t want to move to London though, not that they didn’t want to move away from Liverpool.

We all love Duffy but he's 34 in October... worth keeping for another year as a super sub but there is no mercy in football...as we shall see next season.

Fair enough mate, I just think Duffy has earned his respect through his superb performances on the pitch and I just don’t like the disrespect shown by many on these boards to a player who has given us nothing but 100%. People should save their harsh words for cunts that deserve it, Duffy doesn’t.

Because he’s 34 and has never played at this level before. Simple as.
I get the age issue but just because he’s never played at that level doesn’t cut it for me, most of our squad hasn’t played at that level, I think Duffy is more than capable of playing in the Prem for a season or two.

The main thing that concerns me is the fact we struggle when he doesn’t play, something that’s been mentioned a couple of times on here, I suppose only time will tell but I think Duffy should still be playing games for us next season, just until we settle into the league.

Does he have any resale value once his current contract expires, or are we going to be happy for him to leave on a free?

I would assume its the latter which means there is no benefit to the club to offering him a new contract.

If he didnt like the increase in wages for reaching the prem in his current contract then he shouldnt of signed it... simple as

Why do people feel sorry for him?
He signed a new contract last year and got another pay rise when we got promoted. Who in their right mind would offer yet another extension and pay rise to a 34 year old.

It’s his own doing, money grabbing bastard

He’ll be leaving for free anyway so we may as well make the most of him whilst he’s here.

It’s not a case of feeling sorry for him, he’s given 100% so deserves a bit of respect.

......and it’s comments like your bottom one which are out of order, he’s trying to get the best deal for him and his family towards the latter end of his career, just like any other fucker would in any walk of life. I think he’s deserved one but I’m willing to go with Wilders decision as he will hopefully outlast everybody else at the club.
