DUNFERMLINE goalkeeper Dorus De Vries could be handed the opportunity to anchor Sheffield United's bid for glory next season if Paddy Kenny elects to join an established Premiership club.
Republic of Ireland international Kenny, United's undisputed No 1, is odds on to remain at Bramall Lane after his representatives opened talks about signing an improved contract.
But until Kenny actually commits his future, United's new manager Bryan Robson is obliged to keep a watching brief on possible replacements and sources in Scotland insist that De Vries is a possible target.
Hibernian have been monitoring De Vries' situation ever since Dunfermiline were relegated to the Scottish First Division but the opportunity of a move to England could prove too hard to resist for a player who started his career at Stormvogels Telstar before joining ADO Den Haag.
De Vries, a former Holland Under-21 international, has also attracted interest from Wigan and Swansea following a series of impressive displays.
But Robson is still confident that he can avoid the need to use valuable funds on a position which will not be a priority should he receive assurances from Kenny.
