Don't take Billy off

Were you at the match yesterday?

Genuine question.
I was there. We never looked like scoring in the second half. The only winners were going to be Bristol after an hour.
Both Sharpe and McGoldrick were pretty ineffective and Clarke was the last throw of the dice. Watching Johnson attempt a 25 yard volley in the 92nd minute when he could have run at goal was pretty disappointing too. McGoldrick should have gone off not Billy but maybe CW is saving his legs for 60 minutes for the game on the day after Tuesday.

Thought Sharp was heading for a second yellow today with this ref and hadn’t been particularly effective. Made sense to bring on fresh legs IMO.

He would’ve got a red had he stayed on.

His booking was for persistent infringement and the ref was pulling him for every little thing.

Don't think so. Billy wasn't likely to do a daft lunge (he's never tackled anyone in his life). Most of it is sticking his arse in the oppo and other niggly stuff. The ref. would have given him a final warning and he's not daft enough to push his luck.

I agree, Billy would never put a tackle in worthy of a red, but this was the point.

His yellow was technically a booking because as the ref called it, he'd committed three fouls and booked him for persistent fouling.

Billy had just committed another soft foul inside their half and looked frustrated, you could almost see it coming that the ref would've then given him a second yellow if he committed one or two more fouls.

Personally i think it was a wise decision to take him off.

In a tight game like yesterday, any manager worth his salt will attempt to change / impact / influence the game in a positive way. Swapping out your offensive players is usually the way in which this is done. Credit to Wilder for that.

That said, and worryingly for Sharp, who entered the final months of his contract, he does appear to be the one that consistently doesn’t get the full 90 minutes to have his own influence on the game. Which as has been said, being that type of player, can happen in an instant.

I genuinely believe, for all the bluster to the contrary, Wilder really doesn’t rate him that highly.

Maybe I’m wrong.

UTB

Could be that Wilder wants more from his Strikers than someone who does nothing all game but then might possibly, maybe do something in an instant*. Both Clarke and McGoldrick, from what I’ve seen, offers this.

*I wouldn’t describe Sharp in that way but many on here seem to be doing.

Which forum members say Sharp does nothing all game?
It seems that anyone who gives any sort of mild constructive criticism about Sharp or has a slightly different viewpoint about him (and I’m a big fan of his) is labelled “spewing bile” or don’t know what they are talking about. Billy is a legend and fantastic player ........ but like the rest of the players he isn’t fantastic every game

Some on this thread are suggesting he could do nothing all game but then get a goal out of nowhere.

Who has labelled anyone as ‘spewing bile’? I certainly haven’t. I’m more than happy for constructive criticism to be provided for any of our players if it’s required

I think that comment was from The Jackdaw (aka Tyler?)

Thought so!

Genuinely fed up of people who like to have an opinion when he/she wasnt at the match.

Me too but my point wasn't made about yesterdays match it was a general observation as to why the divisions most lethal striker usually gets the hook.

Billy Sharp is a Blades legend and we are privileged to have him. Some lucky few of us know this.

Maybe those that don’t can spill their bile to the next player who scores 67 goals in 4 seasons.

Bit dramatic.

He's really put himself about this season. If he's breathing through his arse in a particular game and not getting anywhere it might be an idea to Sub him to save him burning out later in the season. Let's see how his stamina holds out, as things stand we need him in the side as much as possible.

Was he having a bad game? He played no worse than any other game. He'd have buried the sitters McGoldrick missed.

Which game are you talking about? I'm not referring to any specific game - I'm responding to BW's comments that he should never be taken off because he may always be likely to pop up with a goal. I disagree with that.

If you're asking me if he had a poor game yesterday at Bristol City the answer is yes in my opinion. He did very little throughout the game apart from get into a bit of a ruck and get a booking.

Sorry - I call it as I see it. For the past two weeks I've described his performances as "fantastic" which they were. But yesterday a fair description would be "poor".
