If we do sign Beattie it would be a big statement to the other clubs around us. I would imagine we would be the only club, in this division, that would be able to sign him and getting someone of his calibre to come would really be a boost for us. Barker basically said that Bury didn't really have a chance last week and as such saw the game against us a one where 3 points wasn't an option. That type of thinking is what we want - teams playing us expecting to lose, rather than hoping to win. We want to have a team sheet that when the opposition see who is playing and who is on the bench they can't see how they could feasible beat us and adding a name like Beattie to that team sheet can only strengthen that feeling. Lets have a season where we take this league by the scruff of the neck and be way ahead before anyone realises it and can do anything about it. Adding a couple of quality signings now will only help to keep the momentum going.

Beattie would be a very poor signing, lazy, couldn't care less and far to similar to what we already have in the striking department. The poor displays from Cresswell and Porter were par for the course from Beattie when he was here. He's not interested in United anyway. And yes very embarrassing the fans singing for a player who doesn't even play for us.

Be much better taking a punt on a young hungry striker with pace and a bit of aggression.

James Beattie's goals per game ratio in his career, and especially at BDTBL is infinitely better than Cresswell. I would sign him if we can afford him. As Warrington says, it sends a statement out to the league. We could do a pay as you play deal, a la Woodgate at Stoke. That seems to be working there.

Up your game lads! It would be good for competition amongst the strikers, as no one is really consistent upfront at the moment, i think beattie would be a fantastic signing for us at this level!

3. He doesn't have pace.
4. *And the most significant* He is too similar a style player to the 3 senior strikers at the club. If we bring in another striker it's someone who should give us something different - see point 3.

I'm not in any doubt that he is a good player and point 2 maybe irrelevant as he will be coming to division 3 and not playing in the premiership. But imo we need pace in attack and cover at the back. Beattie is neither of these.

So, yesterday, Porter was poor by all accounts, but the next day we still get threads saying we already have players in Beattie's position and role who can do the job he would do. And while I think he's done a fair job so far, I don't think Porter would get half the goals that Beattie would do at this level.

The only 'young hungry pacy strikers' we'll get at his level are unproven youngsters from the leagues above. I doubt there's anyone in the Prem who we'd be able to bring in as they'll either be unavailable or on their way to a Championship side.

As nice as the "loan them and we'll buy them in January" idea is (I assume this is where Dagnall comes in), there are two main problems with that
a) rival clubs won't sell their players to us, and
b) we can't afford to spend a great deal (the only way Beattie would come in is if he takes a massive paycut)

There's little doubt we need a new striker or two, but I'm struggling to see who we'll get and that Beattie is by far and away the best option out there if he'll come.

I do think though that there might be something to be said for strength in depth. If the style of our strikers is proving fruitful within our style of play then it makes as much sense to have more strikers like them as having something different. I do however see the need to have some pace to stretch a team, but the players with that Bellamy-esque burst of speed are not in great supply. I have no doubt DW is looking at all types of player.

Personally I think a fit and substantially cheaper Beattie would give opposition defences nightmares. We as a team (Ginger Messi aside) look much bigger this season than for the past few and whilst style has its place I do also belive in having a powerful team to make an impact. What would worry me is the more selfish areas of his game (eg taking all those free-kicks) and it must come down to DW as a manager to get the best from whoever he brings into the squad. Players performing for managers is as much of an issue for me. The board will decide about the finances of any player, but the questions for me are can Beattie get fit enough and also fit in with the squad and how Wilson wants us to play. As fans we obsess over the financial details as much as the performances on the pitch. If we can sign Beattie is up to the board. Whether we should is up to Wilson and Beattie himself. If he wants to play for us and do well for us and the manager then he would be an asset.

And it's no doubt more than a little simplistic to say we didn't score in the first half due to not having a pacy striker up front... I refer you to a certain Mr Slew's set of mediocre performances this season.

I will take all of this back if Danny pulls of a stormer and gets in someone like Ravel Morrison.

Yes, it's possible to get by without pace, but I think it's more difficult, hence most teams aiming to include it - at any level. I also think Beattie would score goals at this level. But, I think he'd be a short terms success, and (realistically) an expensive one. He'd possibly leave us unable to address a problem area, and most of all I fear an even bigger wage bill will mean we will continue to sell our best youngsters.

Havent we already put the brakes on this because by his own admission he isn't fit? If he were fit enough then yes we should certainly look at him, but not break the bank to get him.

Guys goals per game ratio for us was awesome. However, it has to be within a budget that makes it a good deal for us. Why make statements of intent on players who are a bit of a gamble? Better served going on as we are, it seems to be working ok. In my book if DW brings him in it will be a well considered move because thats what he has done since he arrived.

I trust DW to do it if its right, but avoid it if it isn't.
