does Collins deserve some praise

come back in and settled in
and alongside Edgar , given us the experience to keep out the opposition

will drop the odd clanger , but over 46 is a solid round peg in a round hole

Let's not get carried away - he was appalling last week, but has followed it up with about two good minutes midweek and a good solid performance today. I would still be much happier with us looking to improve on him in this transfer window.

Collins played well against Gillingham, and was a proper centre half today. The passion has to feed into the team as well. We need a third for cover or rotation but I'm glad he's at the club.
Sorry but he was awful last Saturday ad were the rest of them

He does deserve praise. That's the positive bit.

But I suspect, like Higdon, once competition for places hots up, he just might find himself nudged out.

Squad player ......
Need another strong, solid CH to play with Edgar and we may plug the leak if we get whispering Bob and eventually Brayford back .....

Thought Collins did ok today. His distribution was absolutely appalling mind but he did the defensive bit very well. In agreement with some of the posts above that he's a squad player, think we can do better.

Collins certainly does and was excellent today and just behind Edgar who will turn out to be a great signing.
Sammon was immense and like Billy was unlucky not to score.
Great game of footy and at last some height in the side that makes Scoogs and reed look even shorter :)

I agree. Played well today, as did McEveley. Due to McEveley now being captain I think when Harris is back McEveley will go back central meaning Collins misses out.

You lost me at "Collins played well against Gilingham".............

yeah, well done to Collins, did what centre back should do today and error free.

Not my favourite player but if he does that for the next 44 league games he deserves the shirt

As a defender he played well, making good clearances, strong in the air, marked tightly etc. But when it came to playing the ball, he was uncomfortable when in the 1st half we were playing square passes and receiving short kicks/rollouts from Howard (Freeman and Edgar were ok with them though). I was glad that after half time Howard stopped playing short kicks/rollouts to the defenders and less of the square passes

I'm not his biggest fan it has to be said and I have said that he isn't good enough to play in our first 11 but I'm not scared to put my hands up and give credit where credit is due and I think Collins played well today. If he continues to put performances in like the one today then I will be very impressed. To be honest I thought we did well today as a defensive unit with bodies being flung around blocking shots (something we didn't see enough of last season by the way!).

Whether Collins or Edgar did well is irrelevant, we need cover at centre half in case either is injured before Kennedy returns.

Still very high on my priorities.

Scoogs did get knocked off the ball a lot, with his height disadvantage needs to vary his runs a bit and turn his man more like he did season before last

Good, solid display from Collins today. I'd expect nothing less when he's alongside a big centre half. Good to see some height along the back line and throughout the team by the final whistle. Also, nice to see both centre halves being vocal too.

If they can get someone in that is better than Collins (and gives the team just as much leadership) then fine but I wouldn't have a problem with Collo being centre half all season providing he's alongside a big dominant cb. Would have Collins centre half ahead of McEveley everytime.

I never critical of Collins ability, as ive said I worried he be too rusty after clough imposed exile

being one of Collins biggest critics - yes he does deserve praise.
he may benefit from at last having a CH (Edgar) that dominates balls in the air - this should take a lot of that pressure off Collins.
Mceveley, out of the centre also helps.

We now have Edgar, Collins, Mceveley, Basham, and Sammon plus Howard who should now be able to deal with set pieces.

Noticed Howard a few times, punching out - great to see.

Keep up the good work.

Did anyone notice Adkins going mad at Collins when he had the chance to clear it downfield, but took a completely unnecessary touch and got forced into booting it out for a throw in? Thought he did well today, when he attacked a header, you really fancied he was going to win it.

Absolutely does.

Everyone had a solid performance today (Baxter looked knackered though)

Only grumble is we over defended a bit, let them come at us, probabley a reaction to last Saturday

We allowed them too much time in midfield, we didn't close them down so they got balls forward at will. This is why need to improve on Baxter and Basham

You are for me spot on - some will disagree with Baxter. If the defence including Collins is temporarily sorted (or should we say better) the problem now moves on to centre midfield and Scoogs tbh. That's the big problem with football, you solve one problem and up pops another as it is perceived to be the new weak spot.

The OP is about Collins so it's unfair to discuss Baxter/Basham too much.

It's not the problem with football, it is football.

Even Man City are constantly looking to improve with all the money they have spent.

That's why players have no loyalty because if someone can be brought in they are out of the team, it's a tough short term business.
If Murphy puts in 40 starts for Brighton how do you think the guy he will have displaced feel?

Murphy? who's he? ;)

If the rumours are true that Clough was looking to off load Murphy and bring through Adams, then that is fine.
Personally, I would have had Adams on the right and Murph on the left - with them switching during a game, but as we all saw yesterday, we have a good deal out of the transfer.

I feel our biggest problem now is how we solve central midfield - we are going to have to be very careful in away games. Perhaps Adkins has us lined up for the diamond approach used at Gillingham - if he does then it needs massive tweaking.
