The fact that several Championship sides were ready, willing and able to spunk the £5m on him suggests that you might, emphasising the might, be wrong on this one ;)

FWIW, I wouldn’t have wanted us to pay anything like the £5m (plus those pesky wages these buggers seem to require in addition).

I reckon we can do better.

Not least of which would be to better deploy our existing resources ;)

They only played Derby. Lampard looks out of his depth already. Easy being a pundit!

Waghorns a good championship player and would have done a good job for us. He will be a good player at Derby also, but I do think he's put money before his career by moving to Derby as i think he will be in and out of the team at Derby due to the silly amount of forwards they have, whilst he would have been our main man here. I also think Fat Frank will struggle after all the early season enthusiasm has run out and the reality of the championship slog kicks in.

His bank balance will look very nice but I think he may come to regret not joining us.

He is still a good player though and I initially wanted us to sign him before our interest became known n the press. That said I got a bit uncomfortable with the transfer fee and wages apparently wanted by him, and I was delighted that we didnt sign him in the end as I think he was well overpriced, the transfer seemed to be taking an eternity, and he and his agent seemed to be angling for the most lucrative financial deal only.

In the end, i was pleased we didn't get him, and I'm sure that CW will find the right one for us soon enough as well.

Any guesses as to what his wages were/are now?

I thought he looked decent against us when he played for Ipswich but still have a mental block that £3m + should buy you Deano or Shearer. &
£5m seems to be the new £750k. Anyone who scores the goals that takes you up is worth it. Trouble is, there is no guarantee and players seem to want the wages as though they will guarantee it.

Agree with almost everything said so far, I was uncomfortable with paying the 5m we supposedly bid and think Ipswich held onto him until the last minute to reduce his effectiveness to whoever did purchase him, it'll take a couple of weeks for him to get up to speed with his team mates. Glad we didn't blow the budget on him but we now have 2 fit strikers and Lavery who didn't even make the squad this weekend. Maybe we'll get somebody in on Monday, maybe.

Mick McCarthy will have got the best out of him and mcgoldrick
Looked to me like he was playing a central role of an attacking three and didn't really know when to go and when to hold and his timings were off

I'm actually pleased we didn't sign him as I thought he was toss at rangers and last night he looked like that player again

Fans in Scotland who saw him play for Rangers can’t believe how much he went for. They didn’t rate him, and that’s playing in the Scottish pub leagues.

A colleague of mine supports Rangers and couldn't believe the figures been tossed around. I'm certain there's a good player there, but the fee is just another clear example of how mental football has become.

spoke to the Rangers lads at work about this.
me: what about Waghorn John
John: Waghorn. .scores blinders. misses sitters. probably looks good on youtube
me: is he worth 5 million plus?
John: laughs.. he's good but not 5 million good. that is ridiculous

Weren’t we linked with Kemar Roofe before Waghorn?
we've been linked with every striker in the league mate. Agents have looked at our front line and thought 'ooh perhaps get someone in there if i can spread a load of discontent about them being too old'.. they are in their early thirties not their nineties.
yeah i changed my mind about this ..
