As we all agree, every team needs someone to put the hard tackles in, someone to put a heavy foot in when the need arises. Despite his lack of height, Doyle is scared of nio one. If he could get his body over the ball when hitting a 20 yard screamer we would see the ball in the net instead of sailing over the cross bar. I was a critic of his under Wilson and Weir, as he seemed to pass to the opposition on a regular basis, but he seems like a new man under NC.

How many times have you seen Dimaio play to pass this judgement ? Dimaio is being hard done to at the moment and when the chances come along for Dimaio to prove himself it just happens he's away on international duty

In the recent SUFC vs SWFC U21's game at BDTBL, I thought Dmaio was man of the match, probably just shaded it from De Girolamo (and to be fair the SWFC keeper, who kept them in the game).

Doyle has played alot better since coming back from suspension. Anyone who says he has always been his player is off their tits.

Totally agree pinchers, especially regarding the end of season quote,he is not good enough for the Championship,he's done a good job for us recently, but the sooner people who love Doyle as a player realise this, the better.
Now the last bit is a tad patronising Wiz! I assume you include Clough in your Doyle lovers? :-)

Did he? Know that do you?

The fact that he didn't play the first two games of the season must say something. Nigel also said he was short of a defensive midfielder. However, he was pretty much my mom alongside Wallace on Saturday and that looks like it could be a good partnership. However, if Wallace is not there Doyle and Basham isn't so I think Nigel will be looking for someone with more energy.

Coady was Doyle's legs last season and why I think he was a big miss this season.

Doyle and Basham not a good pairing on the evidence so far. Wallace makes such a difference to the midfield and how we dominate in that area. Just hope he can stay fit.

Thing is; play a player to their strengths as they'll invariably do well; case in point, Michael Doyle.

Keep playing a player outside of their comfort zone, and usually they'll struggle; case in point Chris Basham.

Let's not write off the latter until he's been given a chance in his more familiar role. Problem is, that's the one Doyle is currently clinging on to. Basham is not the box to box midfielder that Wallace is or Coady was last season. I don't think he was brought in as such either. My feeling is that he was considered as competition for Doyle.

I like Dimaio; I hope he's going to be a very good player for us. "Hard done by" is a bit absurd, though, isn't it, for a kid still learning the game?

absurd ? Clough has stated anyone playing well enough will earn there reward Dimaio is probably the most consistent player in the u21's and after playing 2 league games and getting man of the match in both last season and being awarded young player of the year I don't think it absurd all

If Doyle and Wallace are together all season I think there is enough know how for us to go up. Sitwell pointed out that Doyle suffers when he has a weak midfield partner. Basham being the new lame horse. We need another midfielder to help rotate (Coady, who can play both positons)

Wallace created more chances and space in the 2nd half than we have had all season. Higdon will score goals given chances as will Baxter and McNulty. I think this is why I think a central midfield and a centre half are more important players to find.

I think Reed, Dimao and the returning Cuvelier should be enough. And then Basham to cover Doyle.

Centre half and striker for me as priorities. I wouldn't mind a forward thinking right back too if I'm honest.

I think Baxter could be very effective sitting in Doyles position with reed and Wallace in front of him, in case Doyle gets injured (very unlikely) or suspended (highly likely). It was a suggestion I read on here a few weeks back

I personally don't think Cloughy is a Doyle lover, just because he plays him doesn't mean he's a lover as the first 2 matches proved. But,if Cloughy is an admirer, lets hope he's just an admirer whilst we're in league 1 and not if or when we get promoted to the Champs,as imo he's simply not good enough for the step up.Keep up the tidy work though Michael, you're doing a decent job atm.:)

You have to run a bit and tackle to play in Doyles position ,Baxters main weakness's.

is that the present forward thinking Right full back that set up Higdon's goal on Saturday and passed to Baxter to score against Crawley?

Do you not rate Alcock?

UTB

I'm not quite as enamoured as many have been so far, but I do rate him. That said, I think he's had a number of bad games in addition to his good ones.

And as Grecs points out, he's clearly not been as consistently good at getting forward as Brayford was. Or various other predecessors. Maybe I've just become complacent when it comes to right backs.

I just think that in the formation that Clough prefers, we need full backs who really push on. And in most games this season, and in his career to date, that's not Alcock's game.

The problem with Brayford, and I really do not know what planet some Blades live on, but Brayford was on (apparently) £15K per WEEK = £60K month, 720K per year, and I believe he has this year and another one left. Even those 2 years equates to a total salary of 1£1.44M.

We could not then, and we cannot now, afford in any way shape or form afford to:

(a) pay £1M in transfer (and at that Cardiff make a loss)
(b) pay his wages - Cardiff would not be as generous as last year with not being in the big ears league.

Assuming you were Brayford, would you give up that amount of potential earnings AND drop down a division, with no guarantee we are going to get out of said division?

Alcock may be a poor man's Brayford, but he is good enough for this division, without bankrupting the wage bill.

Be sure, Brayford is on all our wish lists should we go up, but a centre half is probably a definite requirement if we are going to at least look as though we can finish comfortably in the top 2, which is still not beyond half a dozen teams including us.

UTB

Woah, do I say bring Brayford back in that post? I've also said elsewhere that a centre half is a priority.

Regardless, I still think a reason for our success in the latter half of the season last year was our attacking threat from full back. Something we have lacked this season.
