Another side of our game, which rarely gets mentioned, is the superb disciplinary record we have this season. I believe we have had only one player (LJF) miss a game through accumulating 5 yellow cards, and have had no sending offs all season. This has a huge positive impact on our season as it has allowed us to keep 11 players on the field for each game, and allow us to keep passing the ball into space. Also, it shows a direct correlation to the style of football we are playing now. We aren't the big brute team people used to tag us with, but a team who now quick enough and smart enough to not give silly fouls away.

With everything else this season, this is due to Mr Wilson, and another positive to come from this season so far!

Cressy and Quinn have also missed games through 5 yellows. What has impressed me is that LJF has made sure he has hardly picked up a booking since he lost his place through a very early suspension, I feared he would be getting more bans for 10 and then 15 cards the way he started the season.

We also seem to be remarkably free from injuries.

Is this due to the way the team is playing, or better conditioning by the fitness people?

Danny Wilson has changed very quickly everything that was wrong at the club and has proved to be a very astute good appointment, by the powers that be ast the Lane.
Just let him keep this Squad together.

Sometimes players don't want to get 'injured' if you get my meaning ,if they are enjoying their football.

I think thats a great point to make. Wilson had a go at him for his record and it shows great trust and belief in the manager to listen and take on board his points. That is also happening in all players and their attitude towards the way they play and eachother.

williamson also had a ban I think. But we have been very disciplined this season.

So far this season:

- 8th highest number of fouls (Pigs are 3rd)
- 4 players with more than 5 Yellow cards (Were 5th in the divsion for bookings, same as the pigs)
- The ONLY team in L1 without a sending off
- No penalities conceded (the pigs are the only other team not to have given a penalty away)

Last season (on the whole season)

- Gave away 10 Penalities
- 12 red cards
- 5th Highest for bookings
- 3rd highest for fouls

Can't make a direct comparison as we're not yet at the business end of the season, played more home games and of course its a different division.

But we'd certainly have to be going some to get so many red cards and give pens away! We'd have to pretty much give away a pen or get a man sent off in every game until the end of the season!

So in some parts of the discipline, yes were doing better.

But discipline means more than just reds/ pens/ bookings and suspensions. To me discipline has improved in so many other ways - the shape, the organisation of the back four, fullbacks, fitness and not being properly drilled on set pieces.

Last season we gave away so many pens and reds through defenders making a last ditch tackle because either the other defenders were out of position or they got themselves into a terrible position. We also gave away a lot of goals this way.

Wilson and his team should be acknowledged for this

It came as a big surprise to me last summer that United didn't receive a hefty fine from the FA for the 12 red cards. Perhaps

another club got fined for having even more.

I thought we gave away a penalty at Stevenage, LJF? I agree it's not just about the stats though - when we were in that bad run of conceding late goals a few of them came from unnecessary free kicks given away - eg Leyton Orient. Those kind of things seem to have been cut out, or we are just killing teams even when not playing spectacularly (eg. Bournemouth away).

like i've mentioned in other threads we can even do corners and set pieces now.. (as long as quinny doesn't take them!).. we've been terrible at them since cotterill left

When was the last time we had no one sent off for the whole season?

1989-90 I reckon.

Another stat is that we have only had 2 pens for and 1 pen against this season. We must be on course for a record low number of pens in our games.

We did concede a penalty at Stevenage.

Took the stats off the OS this morning, just checked again and it doesn't get a mention in the Club stats or player stats.

It does feature in the Match report though.. Bugger thats one less stat to worry about then

If discipline extended from just the back four to including a more structured midfield for the entire game then I'd be a little happier, but the lack of red cards and rash play that encourages them is a big plus for this season and the impact DW has had.

That said, the number of bookings the opposition seem to be getting also seems pretty low from what I've seen at BDTBL - so would seem to suggest the refereeing standards are just slack.

I disagree. I much prefer that there are less yellow cards, and I don't think it means refs are slacker, just seem to have a little more common sense and don't book people for ridiculous things. I could get used to being in these lower leagues you know!

We seem to be picking up a lot less bookings than in the early part of the season.

another game today without a single caution for a Blades player.
