Different Coloured Badges on Kits

Fan or not a fan?

I'm a huge fan personally, on away kits of course. Never home. But it can turn a kit from a meh kit to a classic. I think the luminous kits we have would look so much better if the United badge was just a black outline for example. Same for our pink kit this year, I like it (even though the sponsor is placed a bit too low down) but it would look even better if the badge was just grey.

Take a look at some concept kits as examples:


The bigger teams do it really often, and I think it more often than not makes the kits look much better. Be it more of a transparent outline, or a new colour scheme:



Also I like what Celtic have done with their third kit badge this year, Roma did something similar last year, and there's a concept of what we could do:

It's just like the badge is an afterthought for us, whereas when it's incorporated into the kit both the badge and shirt look so much better

We have one of the best badges in football. I can be won over by the idea of tweaking the colours though for the purpose of it fitting with the aesthetics of the kit. It’s pointless though if there isn’t a similar approach with the sponsor tbh, and the red of our badge at least links with the USG red on the current away kit.

As for the idea of shoving a circular badge into a shield, I don’t want to see that sort of grotesque savagery of the badgery. Vote No on Concept Crap A.

The shield badges sparked all sorts of angry forum debates at the time. I didn’t fight in the first Badge War just to see us repeat the same mistake 20 years on.

I think you are right about "the bigger teams" opinion - confident about there image that they don't have to slavishly follow a set colour scheme (although brand continuity is very important in the main).
I did do the current away shirt with a mono idea earlier in the kit post:

Here's the image - I think that both sponsor and logo should be in black (perhaps silver instead of the white would be better in the badge). I think the simple mono elements elevate it from a pink shirt we've stuck badges on - to a properly created and unique SUFC away shirt.

I’ve already answered that, it’s not worth tinkering with unless it’s accompanied with a shift in the sponsor colours. Case in point being the current away kit. I think it looks worse as a black badge and USG unchanged, than how they currently are. How a sponsor looks for me impacts whether I buy a kit. The only United shirt I’ve bought since the Macron days was a sponsor-free 2015/16 shirt – this despite the season we had in it (the shield on it is mercifully its own thing, rather than them butchering our brilliant badge to put in it).

Closest I’ve been to buying a recent one was the Alpharooms one, then I noticed the DoorDeals logo on the back. I’m sure where a deal for a door is to be had, DoorDeals are your people, but for me it looking in my view terrible on the shirt led to me not getting one. This is why I suspect most sponsors will insist on no change to their colours – the green clearly made it stand out (the dream for a sponsor), so why would they if they’ve invested the money to sponsor?

I agree a sponsor changes the whole look and feel of a shirt.

I wouldn't buy our shirts if we had one of these Chinese betting firms with their Chinese symbols about 60 inch high allover the shirt. Makes them look a right fucking mess.

My gut reaction to this question has always been no, not a chance. Then you submit these concept Blades kits as supporting evidence and it's really tempting. These are exceptionally well done.

I'm not arsed about other club examples, I've always thought Man United doing it, as per their pink kit here, strikes me as a great heap of nothingness. I also think it depends how well it's done for the design.

Then, you share the idea of a altered logo, as with Roma etc and wow, that purple and yellow kit is a thing of absolute beauty.

My question is, should our original badge and colour be kept on even the most striking of away kits with the brightest of colours, as surely it will stand out even more and amplify our logo further?

For me I'm comfortable enough with our identity as a growing global brand (that's what the Premier League gives you) that our badge doesn't need to stand out on every shirt. I'd rather the shirt look better and if that means changing the colours of the badge so be it.

I wouldn't be against changing the colour of the badge occasionally, do it right and it can look good. As you say though. never on the home shirt.

Not keen on the shield idea but I do like the complete change/rework of the badge. The one on that yellow & purple shirt would be great.

Would prefer it if we kept the Yorkshire rose if we were going to do that but, monochrome badges, yes please. Looks great on some of the training kit I've seen

Except that the current badge is the 11th different design in our history. That's a new badge on average every 12 years! It's really not as ingrained in our history as some people imagine.

For context, we played with no badge at all on our shirts for over half of our entire history.

True. City Coat of arms for decades, still a great badge. However, our current badge has remained more or less unaltered from its appearance in 1977, its representation on the kit is a different matter. The actual badge has been tweaked, but the roundel, with name and date on the outside, rose and swords on the inside and main colours is little changed from the original. Shields, monochromes, transparencies, colour blending with an away shirt...all bollocks. Round badge in red, white and black

No,no,no,no, never, there’s no need ever to change the club badge. It can’t possibly a colour clash so there’s no need to alter it just to cheapen the manufacture of the shirt to make a bigger profit. A proper badge on those examples at the top would make the shirt look smarter than those cheap horrible outlines.
