Outgoing? Diego Di Girolamo

Ah, the enigma that is Diego. At the moment his reputation far exceeds his achievements. It'd be nice to see why the teams that are (allegedly) interested in him rate him so highly.

Obviously the Italian management rate him highly and want to make sure he is going to play for Italy rather than England
When he had his little cameos under Wilson its obvious hes got talent, and for Wilson to give him a chance he must be good as he didnt give any of our other youngesters a chance. I feel if he hadnt had this injury he would have been a squad regular.
Clough may have different ideas but I think if he can get his head right along with a good pre season he may well break into the squad. Time will tell but I wouldnt compare him to Mellis

Diego's time in the spotlight has been quite odd...

PHASE 1) Everyone gets VERY excited about such a good prospect
PHASE 2) Those from phase 1 are shot down as placing too much weight on his young shoulders
PHASE 3) Everyone comes to an agreement that he should be given time and not be sold to the first high bidder
PHASE 4) Following a serious career threatening injury, Diego is written off as injury prone, overhyped and with a bad attitude mere months after his return.
PHASE 5) Time to sell him to the first club offering a 100 grand as he'll never make it.

He's provoked more extreme reactions than any young player in the past. Be nice to just let him get a good pre-season behind him and judge him on his performance in 14/15.

Oh and for further info.. He's meant to have fallen out with NC.

Apparently walking about in a baseball cap which NC told him to take off and he refused

Have to applaud Nigel for this. I kicked one of our lads out the house for persistent ' baseball cap wearing'
What he gets up to in his own room his fine...but I wont stands it at the dining table!

If the kid was really that good, we would have seen him by now.

How? He's 18. He's been out injured for not far off a full season. He's a regular in the Italy under 19s. He's played and scored for the first team.

Are we starting to want academy prospects in and regulars by the age of 13 now or summat?

Why didn't we see him when he was 16? If you're good enough, you're old enough. Louis Reed is only 16, and he has been on the pitch. I can only recall Diego making one appearance, against Colchester under Wilson in about February '13. As someone alluded to in an earlier post, I don't think there would have been this much hype if he wasn't called Diego.

Because we had a manager who didn't push youth through quite as hard. I'd wager that had Clough been in charge then, he'd have been given ample opportunity, Regardless, he HAS played for the first team, and then got a potentially career threatening injury.

He's 18, I'm amazed that people are writing him off due to not playing in the first team regularly as yet (despite the context).

I do not think people are writing him off as such, but there is a degree of scepticism about how good the boy actually is. Again, I do not think there would even be a thread about him if he was called Harry Smith.

Some of the discipline seemed to go from the Academy when Pembo left. There were lots of (semingly petty in some cases) rules that were there to help the lads show they had the right attitude and self discipline to succeed. The most obvious one of these was the only black boots allowed rule, they had to earn a pro contract to play in coloured boots (H has only just given up wearing his), one of our pupils who I know was very highly thought of in terms of talent wouldn't go with this and so was bombed out, don't think he's currently playing at anything above Pub league level.

You wouldn't believe how difficult it is to find a decent pair of black boots nowadays. Even harder to find some AstroTurf trainers in black.

I managed to get some Adidas world cups, copa mondial and a pair of mondial teams from the internet. Coloured boots are generally shit as they're anything but leather

We had a manager that would bring in old has been loan players above trying our youth set up so thats bollox
We probably wont see Louis Reed again until hes 18.
Hes had a Cruciate Ligament injury as I have already said if he hadnt had that he probably would have been a squad regular
Sounds like you are writing him off beacause hes not Harry Smith and youve seen him once
FFS give the lad a chance

As I understand it Cloughie has a set of rules that the whole club adheres to. The example I was given was all players play with their shirts inside their shorts. I understand one of the younger players did fall foul of this once and was told;).

He didn't like a senior player like Brandy turning up late for training either.

Cloughie now has an iron grip on discipline that had been missing.

He wants Diego fully fit for next season, let's hope his head isn't turned. He's an exciting prospect.

At an award ceremony years ago, Brian Clough once famously told a young Trevor Francis, "Take your hands out of your pockets, young man."

Runs in the family I'm glad to see! :)

Strange that clubs still consider him worth buying even with his terrible injury. You would have thought they would want to wait to see if he will fully recover. So either he is worth the hype, or these rumours are just that?

Seems like a bit of both. The big thing is though that he will need to pass a medical before signing for anyone. If he does that, someone picks him up for a couple of million and he does well it could be like picking up a 911 at Bawtry Auctions for a few grand.

Of course the gamble is that he isn't ready or his ACL goes again and it ends his career. Its a slim chance what with modern rehabilitation and surgery, but in that case i'm sure the insurance will cover the buyers to an extent.

Personally I think a lot of the rumours and speculation are just that, not seen much in it at all. He's clearly talented and for that reason the vultures from the Premier League have been circling, but perhaps he's actually happy where he is. Only time will tell

The kids got talent, otherwise no fucker would want him, would they not.So this about the name thing, harry smith or diego de girolamo ,stop being stupid. He's not a player wev'e just signed and has had a career yet, just wait and see and give diego smith a chance;)

We don't know if anyone else wants him...it is just rumour.

I think some fans are just bored of hearing about a kid where about 700 fans have seen his 1st team appearances in full which total about 30 minutes over two games-25 of those minutes being at The Ricoh in the JPT where he looked like he had some potential but had a long way to go. His injury has put him out for over a season and he has to remain patient to earn his chance.

It is the fans who are hyping him to be some kind of superstar who aren't giving him a chance as all they are doing is heightening expectation about someone who over 90% of them have never seen play at any level.

Time to calm down the hype, not jump at every rumour, let him have a full pre-season injury free then see if he has a chance of making it. We blooded kids last season and if he is good enough, he will get his chance. All because he plays for a country's U19 team doesn't mean he will make it at a high level professional team

People do want him and are looking at him. Some are Championship, some are Premiership, and at least two in Italy are looking.

I hope he stays here, proves his fitness, proves he can live up to the hype, plays a role in our promotion, and goes on to be a great asset to the club.

Time will tell and all that.

Seems like the only people who don't rate him are people who have something against him being called Diego Raymond De Girolamo. I wish people would leave off the ' wouldn't be rated if he was called Darren' line. Cloughy looks like he is trying to give him some tough love wish sometimes we all need.

I am looking forward to seeing how he does for Italy over the summer.
