Assuming Quinn, Willo, Lowton and one or two useful additions been added, had we gone up I can't really have seen United languishing at the bottom of the Championship. More a similar type season to Huddersfield are having.

Lets hope United can rectify this by May time. Who knows, with a bit of luck, there might even be shades of 5 May 1990

Different league, L1 and championship are miles apart. But I think Jones managed to get them motivated last season. It certainly worked but if they'd lost a game I think the wheels would've come off... They didn't and they beat us fairly...as we imploded.

This season it looks like they've bought and loaned some real duds, the barca reserve doesn't even get a game...

The delusional feckless talked up their chances and after a couple of games they were sitting with one foot in the PL...

Jones for me has never been a good manager, but he had a good run...

Jones will get the sack, paving the way for Pep Guardiola to takeover. You could see his influence started in the summer with the Barca reserve coming in. Transfer window opens in a few weeks, Pep can start to look at the players he wants and raid Barca. Wouldn't surprise me if Messi buys himself out of his comtract

I think Burton leaving PorksRUs has been the major influence in their decline.
Would we have faired much better? Not sure as none of us know who would've stayed and who would have been signed. Don't forget Ched would not have been available and pace was still desperately required. The side that played in the play off final were dog shit and needed fair whack of quality to sustain a decent position in the championship. Against the 3 promoted sides we gained only 1 point from a possible 9 at home and 3 out of 9 away - based on this last season's team's record against championship clubs was relegation fodder.
I'm so glad we're much better this season....

Agree with that. There are a lot of good sides with strong squads. Even the relegated teams and ambitious clubs like Birmingham, Leeds and Forest find it hard to find the momentum that is needed for promotion. I'm a bit surprised Charlton has done ok, think Huddersfield may struggle as the season goes on, while the pigs seem to need a miracle now.

Jones first game and Rochdale missed a 90th minute pentalty, K Mac being injured for the derby, Bywater's late save at the Sty, Antonio's 96th minute winner only seconds after BT missed an open goal at MK, BT fluffing another chance at home to Stevenage, Brentford dominating the Pigs ay Griffin park the porcine somehow getting a result, Ched getting sent down with 3 games to go, them playing 5 of the last 7 games before us and therefore keeping the pressure on, etc etc. Wednesday were extremely lucky to go up. Any of those events not going their way and we either go into the last game knowing a win at Exeter would be enough (we would have won if it had counted imo) or we would have been up easily. No doubt that Jones got Wednesday playing well, but the things that conspired against us and things that went in their favour were just incredible.

Would we have fared any better? Hmmm, dunno. I would like to have think the momentum from going up and our passing game would have meant we could do well in the Championship. However Wilson's signings have not beeen great during his reign and frankly some of our squad are just not good enough for the step up (Collins, Doyle, Porter, Flynn, Cressy etc). Lowton would probably have gone anyway and Ched had gone already. Leaving us with Quinn, Willo, K Mac and Maguire that would be able to cut it at that level. It would have meant some seriously good wheeling and dealing (plus McCabe's backing) to have meant that we would be doing better than Wednesday are now.

Probably all true. Our incredible bad luck coincided with the pigs incredible good luck. But that's how football goes. Around Feb/March, some teams assume a 'winning momentum' and everything seems to go their way.

The reason I can live with it is, leaving Wembley in May, I was pretty relieved. No way would we have done anything but struggle in the Championship. And, if it helps, don't forget that last season was truly a freak one for us. Take away Ched's goals and we'd have been where we're heading this season - mid-table. Fun while it all lasted, but having all your eggs in one basket leaves you terribly vulnerable, and that's how it turned out.

Whilst every season has an "if only" list, last seasons was pretty much turned up to 11. And similarly, I think there are too many varibles to say with any certainty we'd be doing any better than they are. We'd have probably still lost Lowton and Simmo, but the rest of the departures - all with Champ crdentials could have been retained as , I think, could Ched given our support during his case (though his Champ credentials would still have been tbc) so we could have made a relatively smooth transition. However, as they have shown, that may not necessarily be enough without significant investment and all Chairmen will have looked at Norwich and Southampton and crossed their fingers thinking momentum is the key. Ours would be at the vanguard of that thinking.

No, they went up because they got more points than we did. In terms of whether we would be doing any better.....it's possible, though I somehow doubt it. Without 4 or 5 very good additions I think we would have been struggling in the Championship as well.

There wasn't much between the two sides last season and I don't think there is now either. In both derbies last season we had the better first half and pretty much outplayed them in the first half at the sty. Unfortunately we lost our impetus in the second half of both games and allowed them to play their game which was basically to raise the tempo and start lumping it into the channels. Worked both times.

If only Michael Oliver had had the courage to agree withe linesman who flagged when Madine's goal went in. But no he wanted a tidy little draw to appease both sets of fans. A win would have set us up nicely but United never do things nicely, they implode, have injuries and generally can't cope with the big occasion so we probably would be exactly where our porcine neighbours are, festering in the lower echelons of the Championship.

Whilst I agree the thought of going to lots of plastic Championship grounds and watching us gets stuffed is not very appealing, it would have been much better for the club. I do remember how depressed I was though, under ale house Micky, watching us lose (and not even score) at Ipswich, Pompey, Palace, QPR etc mind. Just the extra £3-4 m in turnover would have lead to less debt, less pressure on restructuring etc. We are now faced with a situation where we simply have to get up this year. And if we do, we have a worse team (and have lost our decent playing style) and are likely to fare worse than we would have done this year. If we do get up this year, then the squad would need a complete haul over to get it anything like a team that would stay up. Unfortunately we have the likes of Doyle, Collins, Cressy, Porter (all not good enough) on medium to long term deals. We saw that only K Mac and perhaps Quinn and Maguire were good enough when Birmingham came and gave us a spanking at BDTBL last year (though Brum were one of the better teams and playing well at that point).

But would it? The higher up the leagues you go, the higher the cost of succeeding becomes. There's always another dream to chase.

What we need to do is be financially sound in whatever division we're in and establish a club-wide footballing culture to sustain us. With that should come the capacity to keep our young players long enough for them to succeed with us, not someone else.

Trouble is, McCabe is owed so much money that unless he writes it off, we'll forever be running to stand still.

Yes the wrong team went up. They were nowhere near as good as us when we were at our best and we managed to blow an unassailable position due, in part, to things not within our control.
As sitters says earlier in the thread, McDonald getting injured a week before the Derby was crucial. Evans getting sent down was disasterous.

However, if the point of the post was actually to say would we be doing any better than them now, then I don't think we would though. We'd have needed to spend bigger than we would have done and we'd have still had to cut wages.

I thought this very thing. I think I posted it on here yesterday.

SWFC have performed like a suicide bomber. Killed SUFC then commited suicide. It was a season too early for their squad and by doing that have screwed us royally
