6 years in league one and what almost disappeared overnight when we departed the Championship last time was the loaning of development players to League one.

We've loaned a few players to League two and below since we've been in league one, once the season is underway will we start to see a few younger lads being loaned out for first team experience?

Not entirely sure where we stand now on loans, i think youth loans are half season to a season aren't they.

For me, giving the young lads first team experience in league one can only be a good thing. I guess we might see a few at Northampton

Yeah it will be interesting to see what is done with Whiteman, Brooks and Reed next season.

Can we have these players around the first team or is it more realistic to loan them to a league 1 team?

Get them out there playing in competitive games. The likes of Chelsea (I understand have around 30 young players out on loan) use the system to their advantage. It gives the club a chance to pick the top one or two for the first team squad and the rest to be in the shop window for other clubs.

I think the players to go on decent loans next season will be Whiteman, Reed, Brookes, Semple ( after xmas) and possibly Bennett.

I don't think Graham will go out just yet as he is too young, Slater i think will stay with the 23s and progress in house until with the first team. Possibly he may never go out on loan and just filter into the first team squad.

There are pros and cons of loaning players out.

We know the pros but the cons are:

1. Lower standard of coaching. So they need to be at a stage where they require minimal coaching in terms of technique, basic positioning. At the loan club they'll be more than likely working on patterns of play, set pieces etc.
2. If they do too well at L1 level there's a chance they may be seen as 'the next Dele Alli' and snapped up by a PL club before they even get a chance to play for us.
That can also happen in L2, as we found with DCL. And that will be what CW is considering with Whiteman; do we loan him to a L1 club next season or keep him at ours and give him minutes in the first team?

In my opinion there are certain positions over the pitch where loan moves are a big part of players progress.

I have mentioned Slater. The way he plays, i don't really think a loan move would progress him any further than being looked after in house. Graham/ Semple as centre backs would benefit greatly from the physical side of L1/2 or Conference to give them that physical mentality to go with the other parts of their games.
Keepers in my opinion need games at a lower standard to play in games where they are getting called all the names under the sun from a group of away fans but still need to stay calm and focused. You dont get that at U23s.

Its all opinions at the end of the day.

I would hope some of the academy lads are loaned out at whatever level, obviously depends which clubs want to take a punt, is it still 6 months or a season loan? I think CW will be more focused on collecting points to stabilize in the Championship than blooding youngsters, he knows he will be judged on results at the end of the day

Whiteman seems to have been doing well at the Stags. I'm hoping he'll be involved next season.

I think Young Brooksey could well go on loan initially till January at somewhere like Rotherham or Donny, Reedy I can see staying as Championship football suits his style of play better than league 1, Whiteman quite possibly go to a league 1 club on a season long loan to further his development, it wouldn't surprise me to see Gilmour, Hallam and Ty Smith go to the top end of the conference before the end of the first window till January. Young Semple won't be rushed until they are satisfied he is 100% then maybe go out in January. Graham I can't see going anywhere him and Slater are still eligible for next years 18's so will play youth cup only and rest of the time be with 23's. Slater I doubt will go anywhere certainly not before January probably stay 23's all year mind.Pre season will tell us more about who does what and goes where

I have got to say 'dream' I think you have got that totally spot on and a very sensible view of the young lads we have.....
