I have a couple of ‘trivia’ questions from last night’s game, small details, but perhaps with wider implications. I wonder if anyone knows the answers (I don’t).
1. We started the game with 6 left-footed players (goalie, 4 of back 5, Fleck). Has this ever happened before? With the absence of Baldock, Bogle and Basham, it was remarkable that such an ‘unbalanced’ back 5 played so well as a unit. If only JOC was fit, we could rest Egan and go for a full house!
2. In the ‘old days’, it was common for away teams to make us kick the wrong way (towards Lane End second half). It rarely seems to happen now. Does anyone know whether stats show that this ploy actually worked? Assuming it was Wilder’s tactic last night, I think it backfired - the team were clearly up for it from the start, and seemed to pick up from the noise on the Kop quickly. We have quite often been slow starters recently, and perhaps kicking towards the Lane End in the first half is a factor. Any thoughts?

Not trivia answers just observation, I’m sure teams must have a gentleman’s agreement beforehand to which way they kick before the toss as it always or lately seems we or any home team kick their preferred way the second half, I.E towards the Kop end. Not sure but I think the last time we had a turnaround was when we played Man United, said at the time, “ That’s Maguires doing , making us kick towards the kop first half “. Could be wrong though. No way do we win the toss every time.

Basically, oppo captain wins toss, says to our captain, "not bothered, want to stay as we are Curly?", "Can do" says KC, end of discussion. As scientific as that!

I seem to remember early Seventies we regularly kicked toward Kop in first half, didn't seem to matter then. John Tudor scoring the winner against Pigs, beating Everton 2-1 in the FA Cup, scoring 3 in the last 20 against Bristol City, and the unforgettable 5-1 against Cardiff to seal promotion in '71 all kicked the "wrong way".

Some of the best nights at the Lane have been when we've attacked the Lane end in the second half, eg Jags v Leeds and Michael Brown v Wendy in the triple assault season. Agree it seems to have happened far less often this season though.

Some of the best nights at the Lane have been when we've attacked the Lane end in the second half, eg Jags v Leeds and Michael Brown v Wendy in the triple assault season. Agree it seems to have happened far less often this season though.

Also when we beat the pigs 2-0 when Deane scored through England’s so called keepers legs.

I'm left handed and right footed. I also do some things opposite to what would be expected. If playing cricket I would bowl left handed but bat right handed. I play golf right handed. I think that it may be down to learned experience. Developing in a way that you are comfortable when starting out.

Same as me. Left handed, left footed. Any sport that requires holding an implement with 2 hands (golf, cricket) I played right handed but anything 1 handed (tennis, badminton) is left handed.

I know that there are lot of left handed batsmen who are actually right handed.
Marcus Trescothick being one, who explained once they that is. He would watch cricket on TV as a lad, with bat in hand, but would practice by mirroring the movements of the batsmen on the TV, most of whom were right handed. Think about it and it makes sense.
