No, they were banned from playing at The Brandywell by the RUC because the surrounding area was a flashpoint for violence at the time.
Derry City had to play in Coleraine which is largely Protestant and so the fans were reluctant to travel there and attendances suffered. That's when they withdrew from the league.

Withdrew in 1972 and then they played in local leagues before joining League of Ireland in 1985. In the early 1970s I had chosen Derry to my favourire team in Northern Ireland because I had discovered in the Encyclopedia of British Football book that they wore the same kit as us (I hadnt realised the Billy Gillespie connection until years later). When I started at my boarding school in 1973., I made friends (still am friends with him) with a pupil a year above me that is from Belfast and a Linfield fan. I told him that Derry is my favourite Northern Ireland team. He then told me that they dont play in the League anymore because of the troubles! I hadnt known that too!

They weren't the first big club in the area to have these problems either. Linfields successful city rivals Belfast Celtic voluntarily folded in 1948 due to similar political tensions.
Even when Derry came back they moved into the Republic of Ireland league system in order to avoid playing other Ulster teams where there could be a risk of violence.

Actually met a Derry City fan in Lanzarote a few year back that didn't know why they played in red and white stripes.

Uncanny. I met a Derry City fan in Lanzarote last March - he wore the shirt most days.

When I finally approached him to explain the provenance of his stripes he looked at me like I'd got 2 heads, hadn't even heard of Billy Gillespie. Part timer.

Derry City refer to their shirt being "Candy Striped" ...

Why don't we?

We used to back in the early days. The Cutlers or the Candystripes is what we were referred to in the papers. The 'Blades' was used for both clubs in Sheffield until the Pigs moved to Owlerton. They don't like that fact.

Glory seeking bastard, he'll probably support Dundalk next year :)

Good work, LYDON. It's pleasing to see you extending your artistic efforts outwards from what was (recently) a pretty ace tour of an ok-in-parts album into this, which is rapidly becoming nothing less than a full-blown, left-bank literary salon. The thread begins with gnomic utterance and allusion. It then attracts its interpreters, eg:-

For those who can't be arsed to search, or have an alternative religion to Lydon worship :)

Good work too, GCB.

Paris, man. Paris.

Martin McGuinness knew the reason as he said so in a radio interview some years ago

I'm not sure, but wasn't Candysticks a derogatory term used by Wendy fans back in the day?..the equivalent of us calling them Pigs today.

90% of those wearing our shirts last year on the pitch were known as "useless wankers" never mind "candystripes"!
