As said. Found it funny. As said, lived in Sheffield and always saw signs saying Barnsley borough etc etc. So when I read Sheffield metro area pop. I didn't realise they lumped Barnsley in as well (who seem to have their own metro area too?!).
But yeah, I am a bit sensitive about jokes about our crowds, only because I think our support is one of the best in the country - considering the factors we face:
- Hemmed in catchment area (Thames to north, Palace to south, Charlton to east and Chelsea to west).
- Inner city location & all the problems that brings (poverty, transient population, social tension).
- Lack of any sustained success (only 2 seasons of top flight football).
- Proximity of big clubs (Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea and West Ham are all a tube ride away).
- Worst fan reputation in Europe (we picked up virtually no floating fans).
The only areas of London that you can say are proper, no argument Millwall areas are Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, Deptford and New Cross. Giving us a catchment area of c.100,000 - so to average 9-12,000 every season in the lower leagues, given the above, is pretty good going imo.
I'm a freak tho - trust me, no other Wall fans give a fuck if you take the piss. Seriously, they think I'm a freak. Millwall fans think of the club as 'the knock-about club just off the Old Kent Road'. Perhaps cos I've lived in places like Sheffield where you hear that 'Millwall's support is shit' all the time you get a bit miffed, cos yeah, it is compared to big, one club, city sides like Leeds and Derby. Although if Leeds could average the same ratio of their local pop. that we do then they would be getting average gates of 94,000 in the Championship - and that's not even taking into account Leeds metro area!
