Uhm, it is up to the manager to make the case... I'm a little concerned that Selles is a 'yes" man but hopefully the next few weeks will see that change.

It's not just the defence though is it. The three midfielders not one of them came off, Marsh not trusted ? , Soumare in his own words after the match not ready yet. Right wing , Ukaki not trusted, put Cannon there, who's played makeshift left wing most pre season. There's gaping holes everywhere, some due to injury no doubt , but some due to not having the squad depth anywhere near sorted when the season starts. Yes i know there's 3 weeks left and it might all be fixed or in the next 5 weeks before we get the bodies in and there up to speed we could be in a hole with confidence nosediving.

On today’s showing we need a very strong fast athletic side that transitions can be stopped, at the minute we don’t have any. Before today’s game I thought we needed 3 players but now I think 5 and they’ll need to be the fastest in this division.

Burrows and Seriki would both be far better playing as wing backs… their strength is going forward but they absolutely have to be playing next to extremely solid centre-backs if we’re sticking with a 4.

We were weak in the central defence area before Anel's departure.To offload him without any replacement lined up smacks of incompetence at best, negligence at worst. The fact that I was relieved to see Robinson come on says it all. He's not the best, but he's certainly not the worst.

Burrows is not a LB, he's a LWB ️
Seriki is not a RB, he's a RWB ️
RND is not a CB, he's a LB ️

Question marks still remain is Bindon is good enough for the Championship ️

It basically leaves Robinson as the main starting CB... which is quite worrying to say that the least...

I often think Burrows gets off lightly, it showed today just how poor he is defensively.

Selles openly states the way he sets up he expects his full backs to be able to defend 1v1 without doubling up, which just isn’t going to work with Seriki/Burrows. The 6 in front need to be the ones creating chances and the back 4 need to be able to play a high line but be ready to defend. We just don’t have the squad for it though, so many players played out of position or in a role they’re just not cut out for today.

Did he say the first sentence because any manager can and does do that and did he say the second sentence because if he did he won’t last long. Heckingbottom was openly critical of the board’s promises being broken with transfer funds. Slavisa also told the board he wasn’t getting what they’d promised for signings.

A number of issues highlighted yesterday for me

Yes, defence was poor
Protection in front of the defence was non existent
No spine down the middle
No leadership. I’ve said it before, I’ve never seen such a quiet bunch of players.

What was worrying defensively was the direction I assume has been given. Bindon on multiple occasions put the play back where it came from and not to seriki in acres of space. Even then when seriki got a pass with 15 yards in front of him..he switched it back. This doesn't align with a get it forward attacking style. It was boring and arrogant when needing to score. I assume the manager saw this so is his approach and instruction. At times burrows and seriki also ran inside channels, again i assume a new instruction but defence looked confused. If our whole play is therefore dictated from defence and not midfield this needs real ball playing quality at CB, very fast full backs for recovery, and defensive minded CM.
