Think yesterday is the start of us getting better.

We all agree now that now that’s our back line and GK. We will only improve now with a settled side.

Yep agreed.

As mentioned in other thread, Robinsons injury is a blessing in disguise.

Shows we can play our best 2 centrebacks together in a back 4 even tho both right footers with no issue at all.

Can always switch to a 5 to see games out.

I think yesterday we would have done that but didn’t have the players.

Souttar has made a vast difference to the defence. His command in the air at the back is something we’ve had missing since JOC got that terrible injury. Even Egan didn’t have Souttar’s level of dominance, especially defending set pieces.

Whisper it quietly, but our defensive is actually pretty damn solid right now... and that's with playing 4 rather than 5 at the back.

Currently sitting as 4th best for xG conceded

That’s good going to say we just switched to a 4.

When I compare it to the last promotion season, I feel like we were more solid at the back then due to the system we played, but more reliant on individual brilliance to create something up top.

This year I feel the exact opposite. A lot of our good defending has been through winning the 1-on-1 sprints and battles. But up front I feel like it’s inevitable we’ll create quality chances.

Not complaining, much more fun this way around. Hopefully when we’re more settled we’ll tighten up even more.

Agree.....always said defence is about partnerships.....not individual players.

Anel had his best game in months....so deserves credit.
However I think his improvement was due to the lack of pressure.....so he was allowed to flourish.
There was big Harry Soutter next to him who was very commanding, he makes Anel look small ha ha

and altho Cooper still hasn't been required to make a save
it was noticeable that he has a much bigger presence than Wes and Davies.....giving much needed confidence to the defence.
Also it was noticeable that Cooper was 2 footed and very comfortable receiving the ball at his feet....his passing was good too.

So our tactic now is playing the ball out of defence.....meaning we can keep the ball, taking the wind out of the opposition teams sail meaning we can manage the games better when under any pressure. Last season Wes would look nervous receiving the ball at his feet
and much of the time punted it long straight back to the opposition, hence the defence was quickly under pressure again.

I've criticised out attack options but against Watford we showed signs that we'll be a tough nut to crack this season.
So just scoring 1 or 2 goals might be enough to ensure we have plenty of wins this season.

Really sorted after 1 game against a midtable side ? (yes, they are a mid table side) we will know by the time we get to play Sunderland if its sorted

We defended really well yesterday and it wasn't just about the two centre backs, although they did play well, particularly Anel, who probably had his best game since those first half dozen games after he signed for us.

I think Gilchrist is a good defender and one of those who likes defending. There were concerns that he isn't a natural right back but I think he's done well, especially considering he's obviously not fully match fit yet. He's limited going forward though but he does like a tackle.

Good to see Burrows defending well. He dealt with a cross really well in the first half, being in the right place to make a clearing header.
It's obvious the coaching staff have been working hard with them on their positioning, shape and discipline.

Also noticeable how a number of other players made covering runs back to help out. Vini was the obvious one who made several but even Hamer got back to help the defence out.

This was a big feature of the side that won promotion in 2018-19. We couldn't have played the way we did with the attacking CB's if it wasn't for our midfield tracking runners. Norwood was the lynchpin of this, but before that, both Fleck and Coutts were excellent at it.

Just as the cliche says, you defend as a team.

The old Anel coming back too. Never seen him move so fast, for so far, for that diagonal intercept he made.

Ahmedhodzic had one of the best starts to a Blades career I've ever seen.

Up until December in 2022-23 he was playing out of his skin.

He chipped in with the goals as well, he'd scored 4 in the league by Bonfire Night.

Big question is, is this the year the overhead kick goes in?! ⚽😎
