Finding the merits of certain individual players is pretty futile in what is a team game. Collectively we are a mediocre, uninspiring team who don't really deserve to be playing in front of a 19,000 crowd every other week.

I think to be fair the tempo was slowed by a few - McEv was also culpable - I do not think there is one of our players who is comfortable with a one touch pass - it's always, trap and pass - shows lack of quality that runs throughout the whole team.

Ship them all out and start again.

UTB

Did to watch the game today?

There was a number of our players that played some very neat, one touch football.

And Mcev, despite a few very poor touches in the first half, made s number of lung busting runs from defence into the heart of their defence.

I think your comments are true for a lot of this season, and I agree that we still need to ship most of them out, but not accurate for yesterday.

We played well today and Coutts and Hammond performed at levels we have not seen before. Hammond was in oceans of space all game and Coutts actually tried which shows the past levels has been more attitude than physical impairments.

Both players completed 90 minutes - Halleluiah:rolleyes:

However well they played and however much better the team was, we didn't win a home game in League 1. If we demand promotion next season these players are not good enough to man the midfield. It's obvious.

Was actually very good today. Went about his role very well and made key interceptions and challenges. Hope this this a signs of things to come. Not too sure it will be though.

As a side note, his tackle in the first half was outstanding and the referee did well not to get conned by the play acting (as he did all game to be fair).

Better.
Yeah i thought that he looked class yesterday, most of the side looked decent as well. We seem to have found a side that works together.

First 20 mins we were sitting very deep and we could've been punished, but once we settled we looked a good side. Passing was sharp and swift (a few JMac slices apart). Hammond was running most things. He was even playing a few longer passes

Coutts looked very quiet but him, bash and Flynn seemed to switch around and it worked well. Coutts particularly came into the game more second half.

Couple of points which need addressing:
- billy is still getting dragged out to the wings to cross the ball. He needs to be in the box, it's where he's effective.
- crosses are awful
- set pieces are awful

To finish on a high, It was good to see us playing with a sense of urgency most of which was dictated by Hammond.

Maybe true Fulwood but if Done had stuck to his position instead of being drawn in to the 6 yard box some would have been right on his head, hopefully he will learn from this

We have unfortunately been waiting all season.

This management team, with these players are incapable of getting any better.

If we start next season with this as the basics of the team, we are stuffed.

Gillingham reasonably comfortable in an open-ish game - we toiled and toiled with very little quality on display. Can't fault the effort, although at times it seemed desperation type football as we had to win. Far too little, too late and we didn't close them down like we did Walsall last week.

We should have had this game 1 v Gillingham away.

Not happy at all with next season looming.

Gillingham were comfortable??!

Which game did you watch?

Don't think we were at same match Fulwood we played some good stuff

Hammond is one of the worse value for money signings we have ever made. Yes, he's only on loan, however if he's on anything like the ten thousand pounds a week wages he's reported to be on, then what a disgrace. I presume we are then also paying a loan fee to Leicester for his services, on top of his wages. People are defending him saying he played well against Gillingham. Thats one game and I was there and I didn't see anything outstanding from him. To me he just looked no worse than others on the pitch for once. Yes, Mr Adkins, he might be a good example to young players, train well and do all the horrible things on the pitch that only you seem to see that he does so well, however he is taking wages from the club that could be used for three good Leauge One players. His signing ranks alongside the likes of Marlon King as value for money. If the board sanction his signing, then they are as bonkers as Adkins.

I think that's right, but that's been a problem for a decade now - we are willing to pay far too much for what we get.

Great game today though, by him and the team.

UTB

Did you see the part of the interview that related to this?

I'm not sure he was quite raging but he seemed well aware that this had been happening, and was definitely aggrieved.

As he is effectively paying these players out of his own pocket he has every motivation to put it right I'd've thought.

I got the sense he was looking for an alternative to the Bramall Lane as retirement home scenario.

I'll set them up, you knock them down.

But is it in a town called malice?

agree with PeteBlade on this, it sounds like you were at a different game to me. We weren't as successful at closing them down as Walsall cos they were a much better team than Walsall, but I wouldn't say they were comfortable - we battered them for the most of it, esp. second half.

You're right about too little too late but I reckon if (and it's a big if) we play like these last two games next season, with a few additions (and hopefully sign Baptiste) we'll be top 6 at least.

It's the wages he's going to be on that have scared me more than anything.

If he's willing to have a standard league one wage I have NO problem with him signing, he seems a decent bloke and is a good professional which we need for the other players to look up to. He's not actually as bad as people make out either, I just think we were all expecting a bit more with him coming from Leicester.

If we're signing him, and a younger model to directly compete with him, I've no grudge against him signing. We need as many 'good heads' in the dressing room as we can get, we haven't had enough since relegation.

The key signing for me is Baptiste. Brilliant player, brilliant attitude.

That's up to the board. Adkins hasn't got a huge amount of clout at the moment due to the poor season, he's not in a position to make demands so we just have to say 'if Hammond can find a better offer than a reasonable L1 wage, he should take it because that's all we're offering'.

It's not a 'bums on seat' signing like the Beard, when KM turns into a fan and gets a bit carried away, so there's no reason to pay over the odds for him and I don't think we will. If we do, it means KM has learnt absolutely nothing and deserves to lose his money.

no, we went to the same match and yes, up to the 18 yard box we DID play some good stuff - the score was..................0-0. 16 chances according to the BBC - Did we actually make their goal keeper work?

No problem with effort or commitment - just lack of quality where it mattered. We could have played while midnight and not scored against a well organised team - Just an opinion that differs from some and matched others.

Yes we definitely made their keeper work. The Save/penalty claim for Flynn, the one on one that coutts had. Billy's flick at goal in the first half. A couple of others as well shown on the extended highlights.

Agree about lack of quality though, Coutts and Flynn both should have done better with their respective one on ones. How Matt Done didn't score is criminal (Header). I didn't feel that the ball got to Che or Billy anywhere near enough in danger areas.

It's called lack of quality - mainly from midfield. Billy has the quality, he just seems to be having to do too much.

It all depends whether Adkins believes "that" midfield is what will be starting next season - if it does, IMHO, we are stuffed.

We also hit the bar/post several times, which while not making the keeper work, did one further and best him.

Exactly! If people think that a midfield consisting of Hammond, Coutts and Flynn is going to get anywhere near enough goals or assists for a promotion winning side then I am certainly watching a different game to some.

Were u not watchin when Flynn put it on a plate for Che and Che tapped the ball out for a goal kick .................................................

Hope United take a step bs k if they do negotiate for Hammond.

He's been hit and miss in league one.

Us aside, who is going to offer him anyway near what he'll want?

No Championship team will bother and who else in league one will take him on terms he sees competitive?

I think United are in a much stronger position than him, though his agent will try to sell hin as otherwise.

To be fair to Adams, there was a desperate last ditch touch from the Gillingham centre half which took it off his toe and he couldn't quite react in time. Had that ball fallen to Sharp I suspect it would still have hit the back of the net but it wasn't to be.

Onwards and upwards: 4 wins out of 5 - big ask I know - and Adkins will have the same points total as Clough last season.

That last ditch touch by the gills player some up the match if it had been a boxing match the ref would have stopped it to save the boxer from harm, no breaks on the day but a really good attacking display. Not many teams in this division could live with us on that performance
