NEW YOUTUBE PODCAST: DEAN HAMMOND 'The Truth'

We discuss:

  • Why the 2015/16 squad weren't successful
  • Why he underperformed
  • The contract / Chris Wilder
  • Nigel Adkins
  • The Blades fans

Watch:

It's a very interesting vid. I'm watching now.

I think the last game where he didn't come out for the lap of (dis)honour was telling. Did he think he was going to get verbally lynched?!!

Still a mystery why we didn't achieve more with that team. Partly I think it was an unsettled defence and poor old George Long struggled massively.

Anyway, nice work lads, lads, lads!

Is it available as a podcast rather than just YouTube? I only ask as I do most of my listening while in the car and you’re not supposed to watch YouTube videos while doing 85mph on the motorway.

Sadly not, podcasts cost money so unless we get a sponsor we are keeping these on YouTube, (but I am looking for a sponsor) we have a whole host of them though so well worth subscribing to the channel but I get you I listen to podcasts in the car everyday too. It is something we would like to do.

Next up will be Gus, Suffo and Pesch, we will also have a surprise live guest (from the Warnock era) so fans can ask questions in the chat during the interview.

He tried to resurrect a career that had come to an end. Legs went. He must know that now.

Didn’t he have a trial for a (much) lower tier side and, basically, could not keep up physically ?

He had a decent career prior to coming to us. But he was and remains one of the worst midfielders I have ever seen in the shirt. I feel sorry for that. But it is what it is, and the way he chased the dollar didn’t sit right either.

Will have been the single biggest reason we ditched Adkins so not all bad 😉.

Very interesting from him.

He tried at Worthing but it wasn't a very interesting story so it is not covered in the interview.

Well done on getting the interview. Id have liked to know about the listed and extended on the same day situation. Doesnt seem like a bad person, neither does adkins. Both were just a bad fit with sheffield united.

What an unbelievable fall from grace, wasn’t he 31 when he joined us? He was shot! In hindsight on paper it was a great signing but he knew he was knackered and wanted that final £. Probably why he opted for L1 and no the champ.

Really great interview, very candid. I think he comes across really well. Fascinating to hear his answer where he talked for a minute or two about overthinking on the pitch.

Cheers both of you and cheers Dean for volunteering his time.

Great watch and he came across really well. From what he was saying it's a bit of a myth that his legs had gone.

You wouldn't expect someone at 31 to be at the end of their career. Maybe he was just full of self doubt and worried his career was coming to an end, that is why he kept trying different things. Although his lack of club since leaving us proved he career was over.

The contract issue wasn't really addressed, that nonsense was a big reason we really dislike him.

I don't blame him for the contract extension (who wouldn't take the money?), I blame Adkins for the stupid decision to put that clause in, in the first place.

Probably one of the best interviews with a footballer that I've seen.

Very professionally done lads.

It's so much easier to have a player come on and remenisce about the good old days.

When is Martin Woolford coming on?

Really did himself a great service with that too.

I was impressed by how Hammond took responsibility for his performances while here. He didn't hide behind a niggly injury, or formation, etc.
Just wish you'd asked him how he got his hair looking so perfect during lockdown.

Comes across really well. Grounded, thoughtful, self-aware, with some really interesting insights into what makes players tick (and not tick).
He learned it all from "Sports Psychologist" Adkins.......says the right things, makes a great impression but underneath it all, basically shite!

Superb Interview and I think it puts things into perspective when you've got certain 'fans' wishing terrible things on our own players.

These players do get paid a lot, so granted their should be an expectation to perform and to be able to burden the criticism many do and did deserve. But from this and other interviews seen with the likes of Paddy Kenny, Devlin, and other players interviewed over the past few years - often its not as simple and clear cut as things look from the outside.

It does seem players that commute and stay in hotels away from their family all the time seem to struggle a fair bit. I gather that from other podcasts I have heard with footballers when they had to travel a distance to play for their club. Essentially home games are away games in terms of travel and being away from your family.

Excellent interview! I think he came across really and was genuine. Things sometimes just don't work out for players and there's possibly many underlying factors for that - as touched upon in the interview, they're just normal people, with normal problems too and this can transfer on the pitch easily (Mousset is probably a good example currently!).

Seems like a nice bloke. I feel guilty now for singing 'you must be shit if hammond scores' away at Southend a few years ago

A very candid interview, thought he came across well, but it is clear his experience with us affected him in that he declined further opportunities from other clubs after leaving us and admitted to drinking too much & getting involved with bad company.

Whatever his shortcomings were whilst with us, it’s a sad day for anyone when life’s ups and downs get on top.

Ended up admiring him for his honesty and more importantly having the bollocks to come & do the interview.

it boils down to he wanted to play, no one could ever accuse anyone of coming to united for the wages
players dont want to lose the buzz of playing
truth was in horse terminology he was ready to be put out to pasture, not on a pitch

Adkins after the 4-0 at gillingham recovered well ,when the geese were here , but after they flew off in November he was finished

Will never blame him for chasing the money, unless you have a chance to go to the club you support you would be an idiot not to, even if you think deep down that maybe your legs have gone and you can’t hack it you still give it a shot
