David Cotterill

i had to accept that neither player was ever going to do it for us

You've clearly forgotten the second half of 2008-9, then, because Cotterill was a major factor in our rise to third place.

I think my favourite was Newcastle when he switched the legendary wing man Jordan Stewart to the right wing rather than bring Cotts into the action. Spent 15 minutes like this before Cotts came on and created three reasonable scoring opportunities in the quarter of an hour he was allowed.

All of which were wasted by Henderson.

As an aside, I am always amazed by the number of people who claim that Cotterill cannot cross a ball despite there being acres of TV footage to the contrary. Why, that very evening, Seth Bennett claimed that Cotterill hadn't created anything after he came on and challenged a Football Heaven caller to name one chance he'd created. When the guy named two, Bennett said "you're just clutching at straws"!

Cotterill has his flaws, sure, but to say he can't cross a ball or didn't contribute that season after being restored to the side is just wilful blindness.

I remember being stood on the kop week in week out and getting to the Point where I had just run out of patience waiting for him to deliver

Well, he was certainly delivering in 2009 after he was put back into the team.

You might right but I'm scratching my head trying to think of anything other than a couple of penaltys he put away and Im struggling

I would have him back as well, however they say never go back. How many players have returned to Bramalll Lane, and been as good as previous. Brian Deane, was one, but any others?

Keith Edwards is the best example, I think.

Yes, I used to catch his crosses on row z of the kop, had to move my season ticket because the ball boy needed my seat

This was one of his good ones:

Never happened, Bergen. Cotteril can't do that, remember.

Yeah great cross to their centre half

Is that what you said at the time?

You can argue about Cotts all day. But if one of your arguments is that he couldn't cross, there is no point engaging.

>- cant cross a ball for the strikers
no i'm sorry.. he was the best crosser of the ball we've had in years.. his corners were excellent

Judge were you with me at madjeski when he smashed the third in from 25 yards? Sure we were sat right behind the goal. What a beauty.

Thanks for that Bergen. Seems a long time ago now. I love it when that Teat Owl looks up in search of someone else to blame.

Ah, the classic Hendo shove. 99% of the time a free-kick to the opposition. Luckily, this was one of the 1% moments.

I would be dissapointed if we looked back in his direction.

I've spoken with a professional football manager about Cotts, who said the words "He hasn't got the first clue what to do when he gets a football" and it wasn't the one you are thinking of ;)

He's had a couple of spells where he's been very useful and caused problems for the opposition... Having the odd spell like that isn't enough for the sort of money we'd be shelling out and in the words of Kevin Blackwell, he simply offers nothing defensively.

Before we get into opinions regarding the defensive side of a winger/midfielders game, ask yourself why Mr McDonald is suddenly getting an extended run in the team :)

It's an unusual move for a club to cancel a players contract. Either they've been a naughty boy (not heard anything here), the club just can't afford to pay them (Swansea aren't skint) or they want to give the player a fair crack at securing a contract elsewhere with a club who can't pay a fee. My guess is that a deal with another club was already more or less in place and this move just allows it to be completed. I'll be amazed if it's us!

>in the words of Kevin Blackwell
isn't he the guy that got rid of nathan dyer as well

He always struck me as a wide midfielder rather than an out and out winger and don't really recall him beating his man. So unless we're getting a fee for Quinn and Cotts comes in for free and much less in wages then "thanks but no thanks". We ideally need to replace what we have with better and cheaper though, not just cheaper.

Been told he can leave with few hours to go. Surely worth a punt on loan. Still a good player

Is the rest of the window going to be spent trying to wind him up?

He was a very good crosser of the ball, and good at taking set pieces. Whether he's a busted flush now I've no idea.

The grunters might be overjoyed with this news more than most.....They made an enquiry in the summer as a replacement for a past his sell by date Ross Wallace....but obviously got knocked back.
