Basset has no affinity to Utd ,we were one of his many employers as were Forest and Dingles. He has a place for Wimbledon but his team are Chelsea. How do I know because I had a private dinner with him with 7 other guys and asked him the question ,I was the only Blade present. He went down in my estimation that day ,very disappointing.

Has the cult of the Premiership really come to this? Never would I watch this, neither would thousands of others from the city so it would never happen.
I personally couldn't care less if I never see another Premiership game. Never enjoyed it. Over priced, over hyped, sat next to people who bought tickets to watch Wayne Rooney or whoever we are playing knowing a successful season is not getting relegated with players who couldn't care less about the club, but quite like their 50k a week thank you very much.
Give me the potential for seasons like last year or this over the experience the vast majority of teams in the premiership. I bet Palace fans would swap places. Paying 30m pound for a striker and centre back yet losing every game without scoring, potentially putting the whole club at risk just to try and compete in a league you in reality have no chance of being successful, knowing if you get relegated you could be in serious trouble with a massive wage bill and players you can't sell and who won't leave because they are on a lovely cushy contract.
God I must be getting old. Much prefer to watch my team being competitive in leagues with players and fans who care. Personally, the sooner the big 6 piss off to a European league the better for English football as far as I am concerned.

That's the paradox with me I suppose! I do have Sky Sports and do watch most games and MOTD, but most games are actually very poor and I frequently give up half way through.So still on the fence about the Premiership then
The Championship games that have been on Sky have been much better this season. This is a really competitive league with some decent teams and players.
I do like football and watching good players etc. I just don't want to be part of the circus.

Totally agree. I would also suggest to anyone who wishes to see SUFC and SWFC merge, we already have a "Sheffield FC". They play in Dronfield and have oodles of history behind them. I'm sure they'd welcome any new support.
Meanwhile, those of us who are left can carry on supporting little old Sheffield United.
I would like to see us get to the premier league even though I know we would struggle to stay up, I do think that if we survived the first two seasons, we would be OK, but never trouble the top half.
I wont subscribe to sky on principle as It is part owned by murdoch.
For this weekend though I'm getting a day pass for now tv, I know it's owned by Sky, but watching us hopefully beating the pigs

With regard to the OP, I will always be grateful to Bassett because he took on our club at a time when we had a shit team with no fight and a club with no money and no hope and he somehow got us back into the First Division on a pittance and kept us there until circumstances beyond his control (selling Deane, continual board problems and a bit of match fixing) got us relegated. He signed one of the best bargains we'll ever had paying Donny £30,000 for Brian Deane and gave us a team that the fans could be proud of again.

I reckon if a merger did happen then a lot would go and watch Sheffield FC. This would build up the support and they may begin to climb the league in a similar vein to that lot at FC Manchester or whatever it's called.

The audience for the Premier League is not aimed at you or I, whose alliegence was fashioned many years ago - and cannot be shifted. It's aimed at the generic, overseas, fan who follows the brand (probably with a favourite winner at the time). There's plenty in the UK that do that too. Premier brand first and whatever club is glorifying their existence at that time to make them feel a sense of belonging to summat.
Same is happening for women's football. Under the guises of equality and diversity. It's being thrown at everyone as a brand under the false impression that anyone gives a toss. He standard is hugely awful - the keepers are still a complete joke (Norn vs Republic yesterday). The BBC keep highlighting it in the main bulletins. Can't it have its own show so I can chose not to watch it?
Perhaps we'll end up being castigated for being racist and sexist for supporting the Blades and not the brand football in the future.

Similar to Warnock, I'm eternally grateful for everything he achieved but he's a heavily flawed character.

I think as with all things the right person the right time, United needed a sense of togetherness and he brought it in spades, the football was not always the prettiest but as per a wilder team they worked and played for each other.
Just as Wilder is the right man now, bringing blades together and uniting the club after the years in league one and all that has gone on, I think for your team it will not be long before you need someone like that, I feel Carlos seems to divide the support at times and Chansiri at times as made decisions that suit him and not the club and certainly not the history of your club.

A merged team means the end of the Blades, our history and our culture. If you can really stomach that, to watch some franchise shite in a soulless plastic bowl, then I genuinely pity you.

I've witnessed "mergers" in other businesses outside of football and I can tell you what happens. First of all, it's rare to get a merger of two successful businesses. It's usually the case that one or the other is struggling and they see an opportunity to cut costs and be more efficient by joining together. Unfortunately what happens is business goes backwards in the short term and the end result is often one big weak company instead of two small weak ones. 
I think a merger of the Sheffield clubs would achieve nothing. Some folks seem to think it would result in one big successful city club able to pull in 50,000 fans every home game. What's more likely is that we'd end up with one unsuccessful club with less support than either club has now. The rivalry that comes with having two city clubs, both with long traditions and proud history, is the beating heart of football in Sheffield. It should and will remain that way imo.
I think what is more likely is that both clubs will "gear up" in terms of their infrastructure if they are successful in getting to the next level. For United I'd expect see the capacity increased to over 40,000 and I think we've already started to focus on younger supporters and foreign students to increase our support base. Our pricing structure reflects that as well to some extent, being considerably less expensive than Wednesday's, making it a more affordable football experience for families and people on lower incomes. For Wednesday I'd expect to see them relocate to a new stadium in the East end of Sheffield, close to the M1 and probably increase the capacity closer to 50,000. If they did that I think they'd be looking to increase their support by appealing to a wider catchment area and a more wealthy fan base.
Both ideas could work well. However, if Wednesday targeted this type of more wealthy supporter they'd need to be aware also that they are often "fair weather friends" and not die hard supporters. So if success on the field didn't follow they could soon find themselves occupying a half-empty stadium - a white elephant! with spiralling costs and significant debts. I quite like that idea!

The very idea of any merger makes me fucking nauseous quite frankly and I find it baffling and somewhat disgusting that anyone who identifies themselves as a Unitedite would speak favourably of the proposed destruction of Sheffield United.

The concept of a merger is rational and feasible. Barring some sort of renaissance at either club which completely flows against anything that's happened in the past 100 years a merger makes absolute sense in these days of the money sport where big is power. Sponsors, media, worldwide audiences, global businesses are all interested in brand, size, exposure, image, success.
The staus-quo gives us bragging rights in a city and it's a parochial fight between minnows with little interest in both clubs outside Yorkshire, apart from ex-pats. Each year we lag further and further behind the pace and might of the big boys who get stronger and stronger. Many will say they are keen to preserve the status-quo and then week in week out complain about lack of financial investment and ambition.
It appears to me that McCabe will have left the club to the Prince before long. I suppose when a Saudi and a Thai own each club the chances of a merger are much higher. How ironic that so many McCabe haters would wish for him back should it happen.

Our Derby is still one of the fiercest in the UK still has passion that can at times go way over the top, but that is why we love it.
Look at this week how much more people are on here talking and getting hyped up for Sunday, its a special game as much as both us and them will play it down, this and the return at Bramall lane will be the most talked about games this year regardless of what happens, we thrive on the rivalry, long may it continue.
