We knew that didn't we? No different to last year, but Wilson still made us a better team.

Our only hope next season is if we lose a couple of high earners and get a set of lower waged freebies in return. Preferably KMacs rather than Porters.

That is so funny, seriously, it's bordering on hilarious that there are still Blades out there gullible enough to think that with McCabe in charge we'll ever be anything more than a selling club. Biggest worry at the moment is that we've got fuck all to get rid of. We've nobody who'll command anything like a decent fee so forget all the names being bandied about, we're in the shit and all we'll do is let a few go, sign a couple of freebies or nondescripts and be in the exact same spot that we've been in for years.

Come on Mr Burns, spend a little to accumulate a lot, I know it's not in your nature but being the true Blade you profess to be then surely this is last throw of the dice time. No investment means years in the wilderness, now what true Blade with a few bob would sit idly by and let that happen?

If Porter, McDonald and Williamson should sign there is nothing at all left to spend on fees nor wages for new signings. We must then sell or give away somebody to be in a position to sign more players.

Bergen - I do not see how that can be true given Evans is coming off the books, along with Ertl, Taylor and (fingers crossed) Monty and probably others I have forgotten.

Bear in mind that we spent 110 percent of our turnover on player wages in 2011. I doubt it was any lower last season. Next season we will be forced to get that number down to 65 percent.

Very worrying.

The current team - without Ched - is a midtable League 1 side as our performances at the end of the season showed. We have little goal threat without him.

If we lose the likes of McD & Willo & don't bring in any decent quality we will struggle to be top half.

We are the biggest club in League 1 & need to start acting like it.

Even after releasing Evans, Taylor, Ertl, Simmo etc. we are still way ahead of where we need to be. If we cannot shift the high earners that are contributing very little then DW will have little or no room to manoeuvre.

Ahh but research shows that having a higher wage bill leads success on the pitch so us being able to carry a higher wage bill to start with will be an advantage. Just look at what happened we had the highest wage bill in the Championship. Oh wait. Shit.

We need to get Monty off the wage bill. His contract is now starting to act like a parasite against our wage budget & stopping us from signing new players.

Secondly Morgan. If he is not fit to play again then he needs to announce his retirement & accept a coaches salary. Does anyone know how much he is on?

Could be that paying off a contract is counted as part of the salary calculation so it may be that DW is stuck with him - If this is the case then I think he will be foreced to keep him and then have to play him. The rationale will be that they might as well use him if we have to pay for him rather than get rid and reduce the squad by one that cannot be repalced anyway. Only means of shifting Monty will be if someone agrees to take over his contract (and we agree not to charge a fee).

I would be giving the out of contract players a deadline on making a decision now. I know DW says he will wait until the last minute for them but I dont agree with that policy. We are clearly in limbo as regards recruiting until they make a decision.

If they want to move elsewhere then fair enough and good luck to them. If they want to stay then great but if their decision is the difference between approaching other targets or holding off and missing out then we shouldn't be hanging about.

Signing at least two forwards (good ones) is of critical importance. If that means letting McDonald and Williamson move on then so be it.

An interesting article again Bergen.
However, I disagree with your comment above that the wage bill won't have been lower this season.
By my reckoning we took about 16 players off the wage bill last Summer, many of them on high Championship wages (I.e. Henderson, Yeates, Ward, France, Jordan, Nosworthy, Bent, Calve, Lowry, Mattock, Riise, Vokes, Wright, Kozluk, Bogdanovic and Slew).

By contrast, we only brought in around 6 permanent players, probably on League One wages (JFL, Flynn, Howard, Porter, McDonald, Williams) and around 5 short-term loanees (Phillips, Clark, Beattie, Hill and Egan).
That must mean the wage bill has been slashed from the 2011 total already.

The average attendance was down on the previous year but we made better progress in the cups and will have made a decent chunk out of the play-off matches. So Turnover won't have plummeted that much overall.

We've now shed a further 11 players this Summer including a few of the very high earners (particularly Evans).
My guess is that we are around the 75% wages/turnover mark and can only avoid a transfer embargo if the likes of Monty and Quinn leave and/or we don't re-sign Williamson and McDonald.

I would be interested to know if Wilson means he can't sign anyone until someone leaves due to the club's policy or if a transfer embargo has already been applied by the league.

It could be that DW views any replacements he might get in as inferior / risky options and that's the reason he is willing to hold out to secure the services of the three of them. Too delicate to rock the boat or summat.
Otherwise I think DW would have given them an ultimatum - he strikes me as not the sort of guy that enjoys being dicked around but the cards are all held by the players. The article recently in the Stir about key players contracts expiring at the same time tells us this.
