Danny Mills, a thank you...of sorts

It would appear that the archaic views of Danny Mills have stirred a reaction from a number of media outlets to jump to our defence and point out the ignorance of him and other like-minded lazy pundits willing to dismiss us with stereotypes from a bygone era (namely the tactics employed by Bassett and Warnock).
The much publicised article in Four Four Two calling out Mills has been joined by well thought out pieces by the Telegraph and Football 365, as well as gushing praise from the likes of Alan Shearer.
In the aftermath of a good point away at Bournemouth, coverage of the Blades’ approach has been broadly positive. If we manage to back this up with a performance and result against Palace on Sunday, we may just become the football tactic/stat hipster darlings of the Premier League this season.
Of course, this could also have a negative impact due to exposure, but I’m sure our opponents already perform the necessary scouting and research prior to playing us. Being aware of our system and managing to cope with it are two very differing propositions.
Whatever fate this season holds for us, I do hope we stick to our principles and that CWAK and the squad as a whole receive the plaudits I believe they deserve for implementing the most attractive brand of football I’ve seen in my 33yrs as a Blade.

They were reviewing the PL this morning on Talksport and when they discussed our game and chances, think it was Dean Saunders who said something like “is there any point in discussing Sheffield United because according to Danny Mills they are just a long ball side with no chance of staying up”

He was basically taking the piSs out of Danny Mills then Saunders praised us for our positive style pushing defenders forward, said he really rates Wilder and will surprise a few teams with his overlapping centre back tactics, also praised Billy Sharp (who he said he worked with at Doncaster) for being an out and out preditor in front of goal and said he’s never relied on pace, is a Fox in the box, so won’t be surprised if he hits 10 goals in the PL.

If he does, then more fool him. Even if we are ultimately relegated this season, it still doesn’t justify his comments if we stick to our principles and keep playing the style of football that’s been successful and got us this far. He’ll still be an ignorant pundit, too lazy to do the required research and instead trotting out tired old cliches and out-dated stereotypes.
There seems to have been a move towards using football writers and reporters as pundits on certain programmes and I find them to be much more interesting and better informed than many of the ex pros.
Just as it’s not necessarily the best players that make the best managers...maybe the same can be said for the pundits.
There are of course some ex players who offer great analysis and insight such as Gary Neville, but it should take more to qualify to inflict your views on the football loving public than having kicked a ball at the top level for a few years - you know, the basics like a work ethic, an interest in anything beyond the top 6, and maybe even a little charisma and an open mind. Not too much to ask in my opinion.
Although much lower in quantity, so far I have found the EFL analysis available to be of a greater quality than that I have experienced for the Premier League.

For anyone who thought we would change our style take a look back at MOTD when Shearer shows the map for Bash and Jack O'Connell they are still over lapping and getting forward. Same with the wing backs two of the three in the Bournemouth box in one attack were Stevens and Baldock, Stevens especially was seen out near the right corner flag a number of times. It must be hard for the opposition defenders to know who to pick up when anyone can turn up in any position.

Great words - do you know I took on the shittiest, most deprived school in Leeds. It had 150 exclusions and everyone said on twitter and in real life 'what you want to do just is not possible.' BUT I had belief .... I banned shouting and put a music system in that pumped out the Stone Roses, Oasis, Blur and the Gorillaz 24/7 on volume 11 each and everyday ....... The result was exclusions fell to 1 and we are the most famous school in the country now. If I had listened to the establishment it would still have remained a shit pit. The moral is - if you have 1 chance ... do it YOUR way and ignore others who say it can't be done. The Blades this season can do the same ......... Danny Mills - I remember being at the game in Japan when he made mistake after mistake after mistake - so his words mean nothing

I’ve also heard Egan described as the “quarter-back” of our team in the media on a few occasions already (Tom Brady eat your heart out). So he might be worth a few extra £millions by the end of the season as well! Not bad for two deemed “not good enough” by Brentford fans
