Danny Bergara Dies

Ex United assistant manager to Happy Harry Haslam has died.

It is with great, great sadness that Stockport County have to report the death of Danny Bergara.

The County legend, who had suffered two strokes recently, died at 9.30am yesterday morning.

I was 14 the night of the Leicester game when our relegation to Div 3 was confirmed. My possy then was glued to the tunnel, stood on the railings at the JSS, literally inches next to the teams emerging.

My memory of that night is our players lining up and clapping Harry Haslam on to the pitch and presenting him with a silver salver, think Mick Speight did the honours. When HH walked back to the tunnel he reeked of fags, standard for the time. Fuck knows what the award was for, making them laugh mebbes?

We drew 2-2. Pitch invasion at one point and one of our fans executed a decent flying Kung Fu kick on a Foxes player. Good job Sky Sports News wasn't around in those days, it would have led the bulletins for days.

Before the Leicester game, the bottom of the table was thus

21 Blackburn P41 pts 28 GD -32 (R)
22. Millwall P37 pts 27 GD -16

2 points for a win remember.

Forgetting Millwall, who still had a very long shot at staying up (10 points left to play for, 8 from safety), United could stay up in 2 ways

1. Win by any score and hope Oldham lost their remaining 2 (even if all games finished 1-0, GDs would then be equal but United had scored more goals).
2. Beat Leicester by 9 so we overtook Charlton on GD (they'd scored more goals so an equal GD a 8 goal win would bring wouldn't be enough)

As it happened Oldham won both their remaining games, so a less than 9 goal win would have postponed the inevitable.
