Coventry City defender Cyrus Christie has emerged as a target for several Major League Soccer sides. Christie is out of contract and has turned down a new deal at Coventry. The news has alerted MLS trioToronto FC, New York Red Bulls and DC United who could all sign Christie on a nominal fee as a move abroad would not fall under compensation restrictions.

Christie's looked very strong and solid when I've seen him and not bad going forward either. I thought Clough moved Murphy up front in our last game vs Coventry partly because Christie was such a tough opposition at right back. I had expected him to move to a good Championship club at the very least this summer.

If we're looking at right backs other than the obvious then I'd like to see us trying for the lad who played for there for Shrewsbury at the Lane, looked really good and barely gave Murphy a look in despite him being bang in form at that point.

Couldn't agree more oaklandrdblade, his name was Woods, and on the day he was focussed and hardly put a foot wrong. He wouldn't be out of place at united, and would be one I think could improve under Clough.

Iv'e suggested ryan woods in numerous of threads,he's just signed a 1 year deal with shrewsbury and he is more versatile than people think.

...is this that 'twerking' fella I've heard so much about recently?

Sunderland & Sheffield United are on alert after Cyrus Christie admitted he may not fit into Gary Rowett's plans #safc #sufc #dcfc #dcfcfans

What's "on the alert" mean!?

I bet he's on a reyt wedge there. Can't see this happening.

Could Freeman be leaving?

Christie's a good athlete and good with the ball, but not the best defensively. Wing back would probably suit him. Rowett seems to go with a solid, defensive back 4 without attacking full backs so it wouldn't surprise me if he was available.

One year left on his contract so it shouldn't be a signing that's beyond us.

Question... given that he's not wanted by a mid table team is he:

A) a good player who is better than what he have
Or...
B) a rubbish player who is not good enough for our first team

There's always a danger in judging players about where they are currently. Formations, who they're playing with, style of play, manager etc etc all come into play.

Wright wasn't good enough for newly promoted Oxford remember but was outstanding for us.

From memory Christie was v highly thought of at Coventry and a good attacking full back.

Just asking because up If ain't better than Freeman or Brayford then it seems a bit pointless as the squad needs improving not fattening out

You can't really look at it like that with Championship players due to the nature of the league nowadays.

A team might have finished mid table but it doesn't mean that's where they 'should' be, it doesn't mean their players are mid table standard. There are a lot of clubs in there who've spent a lot of money on good players, but haven't been managed well enough. Derby and Norwich should've finished far higher than they did last season for example. Wolves are another one. These clubs have good players on the sidelines who would improve our team. Whether we sign them or not should depend on cost, attitude etc.

On top of general squad strength it can just be a case of a manager not fancying a certain player, for whatever reason.

I'd have Christie down as an above average Championship full back, and one of the better attacking ones.

Wow... to draw that conclusion you must have seen him many times in the flesh. Is Derby your second team?

Do you go to Pride Park often?

Some of that depends what happens with Brayford of course, if he goes we're pretty light at RB unless the Riley loan materialises of course

Sorry Sir, I'll say nothing in the future. Makes for better discussion that way.

It is possible to know things about players who don't play for us you know. Really - there's TV and stuff now. The Championship has comprehensive coverage.

Not sure why 'flesh' is so hugely important but it's a good thing to say isn't it - it's all about seeing that live flesh!

So what are these "things" you know about the player and where from?

There's nowt wrong with people having an opinion but you talk as if you're some sort scout with the inside track on players. Are you?

It's not difficult to know a bit about players - especially Championship and above - if you just pay attention. A lot of people seem to struggle to grasp that. Christie's a prominent Championship player and an international - anyone who watches a decent amount of football will have had the chance see him play.

The least you can find out without much difficulty is what position they are, what type of player they are and what their general level of ability is. After that, the more you watch and observe the more you'll know, although I will say that it takes more time watching to identify a player's weaknesses.

Would you rather people not post about other players unless they know everything about them? If it annoys you, there's always the very convenient option of ignoring the post, or this entire section of the forum for that matter.

So basically all you've done is had a quick google.

No. But if it makes you happy, yes.

No it'd make me happy if you want to talk like an expert that knows more than the rest of us, then have the decency to explain that expertise. Otherwise you're just leading folk on
